[[ooc: Pinnacle - Day 2 - narrative]]
This was it? One injection would undo this sea of static, the faint beats, the short range? Bring back the Music that had been taken from him. Derek would be able to hear again, really hear. He’d be able to hear the others. He’d be able to find them, their beats. Derek placed the antidote in his pocket, fingers curled around the tiny cylinder, and walked the safe zone until he found an empty cell. Then, he sat on a cot, staring at the needle.
He was almost afraid to take it. What… what if he didn’t hear them?
Shaking his head furiously for even having room for doubt, Derek rolled up a sleeve and quickly jabbed the needle into his arm before he could have another negative thought. He had been separated from them for too long. He heard Spin and J disappear over the radio. He saw and heard Foxx disappear right in front of him. He wanted to know that Morris hadn’t done something completely stupid in his anger. He had to learn what happened to Missy and Chieftain. He needed to be an Agent again… No…
He needed to hear his family again.
The needle was discarded. Derek rubbed the area and unrolled his sleeve. Nothing. There was nothing. Derek strained to hear a note, a chord, something. There was… nothing. Damn it! Why?! Derek stood and looked at the door. There had to be something wrong. This couldn’t--
Then, the Music tackled him at its full force. Everyone, he was hearing everyone. All the people in the safe zone, the levels above, below, other ships, the Music of everything.
Derek doubled over with a yell and pressed his hands against his ears actually trying to block the Music out. It hurt, and he struggled for breath. Had it always been like this? How had he heard anyone?
Focus. This was Music. Focus. It was his. Something that his family had. Focus on something.
Thanks for the joy that you've given me.
I want you to know I believe in your song.
Out of every melody he heard, there were six-seven?! Seven rang out the clearest. Derek held on to them and let everything else fall into the background.
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony,
You help me along,
Makin' me strong.
There they were. All of them. They were all there, still there. Chieftain, J, Morris, Spin, Starr, Foxx, Missy. All accounted for. Two on one ship. Five on another.
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul.
I wanna get lost in your rock ‘n roll
And drift away.
Derek closed his eyes and slumped back against the wall. It didn’t happen again. He didn’t lose anymore family, none of the people he cherished. He wouldn’t. He could believe those words now. He was just in the wrong location again.
Give me the beat boys and free my soul.
I wanna get lost in your rock ‘n roll
And drift away.
Agent Derek allowed himself to stop completely for a moment, listen, and let every note wash over him.
