He felt as though he were being pulled apart. Like so many tiny hooks latching onto his skin, wrenching at his body. They were slowly pulling the flesh apart from the spine, sparking wires bleeding from the wound, stretching and spreading beneath him, coiling like a twist of snakes from his back. The wires curled and lashed, electricity was surging through his body, the metal being pulled away, the blood flowing and heart beating. The wires coiled up, around his head, his feet were pulled from the ground. A voice whispered in his ears.

Louder and louder, the gentle familiar words surrounding him. Both his hands were stretched in front of him, his arms unscarred. The wires stretched up. They spread, the metal was being pulled form his body, falling away to the ground.

The wires held him aloft. They were soft and warm, light against his narrow back. The words were forming with more solidity in his ears. A soft voice, the voice that had saved him.

“Come here, you’re so tired.”

Warm arms surrounding him, and he only knew then how much he’d missed them.

“It’s okay Claus, you’re here. You’re here.”

He drank in the scent, the wires stretching either side of him; electric wings.

“Finally. It’s okay.”
