Book 6: The Rivers of Zaada Personality:
Mark is a very shy guy. He's quiet and to himself, not having many friends. His best friend is Bobby Pendragon, who is quite the opposite of Mark. While Bobby was popular, outgoing, and athletic, Mark...isn't. He's dorky, nervous, and clumsy. He's awkward around girls, all except Courtney, and tends to stutter when he gets nervous. Which is often.
Mark isn't the most confident person. Maybe it comes with being the target of bullying, but he doesn't think highly of himself. No one at school hardly notices him, yet he's a brilliant student. He left middle school as the Valedictorian, though he was too nervous to actually get up and do his speech. He never really doubts himself when it comes to his knowledge, as he's always done so well. He has Bobby's journals practically memorized, as well, always correcting Courtney no matter what she says wrong. He has great comprehension and an open mind. Though he was (and still is) shocked and unsure about Bobby's adventure, he quickly began to follow it easily and understand the grasps of how reality for them changed. Mark is also great with Robotics. He created a small fighting robot and actually won a competition with it. This robot also gained the attention of one of his high school teachers, getting him a spot in the popular and notarized club, "Sci-Clops."
Anything other than academics and smarts, Mark is extremely self-conscious about. He doesn't put much faith in himself, letting others take charge, even when he's sure they're wrong. This came in to play in book five, when Courtney insisted that her and Mark use the flumes. Bobby had warned them not to, yet Courtney insisted it was the only way. Mark trusted Bobby and felt he was right, yet he followed along with Courtney anyways. He continuously expressed his unsureness about their mission to help Bobby, yet he never actually stopped. He followed Courtney through, resulting in the collapsing of the flume to Eelong, the death of Kasha, and Gunny and Spader being stuck on Eelong. It is true that Mark did agree with everything Courtney said, but he still had the gut feeling it was wrong and went with it anyways.
Though Mark knows he isn't cut out for the job, his dream has always been to join Bobby and fight with the Travelers against Saint Dane. The moment Bobby left on his journey, Mark wished he could join his friend. He mentioned to Courtney that he waited for the day that Saint Dane finally came to Second Earth, their home territory, so they could join in the fight. Of course, Courtney snapped at him, telling him how stupid he was to think like that. He realizes how foolish it seems, but that never stopped him from holding on to this wish. It finally came true in book five, when him and Courtney were faced with the choice of traveling to help save Eelong. When finally faced with this opportunity, Mark was actually quite hesitant, showing a lot about him. Even though helping Bobby was a dream of his, he was very unsure. Mostly because he wasn't sure traveling was a good idea, as Bobby had warned them not to, but also because he knew it was going to be dangerous. He was afraid of what it would mean, and he was afraid of how it would end for them. Bobby had faced almost death countless times in his travels, something Mark knew very well. When it came down to it, Mark was scared to help....but he did anyways. He let Courtney talk him in to going to save Eelong, and the entire time, he did everything he could to help. Yes, he was scared countless times, but he made himself be strong and keep up the good fight.
Mark also fits very well in to the nerd category. He's very, very smart, but on top of that, he likes nerdy things. He enjoys reading, he's not very social, and he's picked on by bullies. But more than that, he loves comic books, anime, and video games. During a trip in to Mark's room, it is described as having several posters of Japanese cartoon characters and superheros. It mentions when Bobby comes to visit, the two play video games like old times and watch all the nerdy movies, new and old. Bobby also makes many references to Star Wars and Star Trek in his journals, so one can only assume Mark enjoyed these shows, as the two liked all the same things. Even another time, Mark references back to spending his free time watching Spongebob Squarepants, once again showing his interest in animated shows and such.
Extra:
Character Abilities: HE CAN'T DO ANYTHING. Actually, not true. Sort of? He's really smart. He doesn't forget things easily, and can usually figure things out quickly. He's also good with Robotics, earning him a spot in the group "Sci-Clops," a science club at his school. But that's not really an 'ability'? He's what is called an acolyte, which basically means it's his job to assists the travelers that are on his home of Second Earth. From his canon point, he can travel through the flumes from territory to territory, but he learned the hard way that he's not supposed to.
Possessions: The clothes on his back, plus his huge, ugly travelers ring.
Anything else: He's from earth, and he's a total geek, so he'll fourth wall at the things. Except not really. He'll probably recognize things that came out 2004 or before. So I'll be doing a permissions post for him.
