Madness and Mayhem

Feb 25, 2006 17:57

Last night we had a nice night with a few drinks at a friend's house. Stayed there overnight.

On the way home this afternoon we paerchanced across some  riots!

We saw the garda all grouped up, had a fair idea what was going on, so went closer to get a better look at it. From a relatively safe distance we saw an angry mob throwing bottles at police, and riot police with big heavy shields chasing them, and trying to keep pesky civilians out of the way. There was a strange atmosphere all around, people panicking, fear and  confusion. A few bottles smashed about 10 metres away from us, we ran into a small sheltered area wihere there were some very confused tourists.

Having kept up with the news, we anticipated that things might get a bit crazy in town today, so we brought a camera with us when we left the house last night. I think we managed to get some pretty good photos. As soon as we get them delveloped, I'll find a way to scan them and post them here.

We were stuck in town for a while, because the mobs had moved to an area that was blocking  the route back home, so we went for a wander up O'Connell St, where the main mayhem had happened earlier. Shops were all shut., windows, cash machines smashed up. Some kids had looted ta footlocker store and smashed glass was all over the floor. Now and then we'd see from a distance mobs being chased by police beyond a smoking garbage skip. We even heard a petrol bomb exploding somewhere in the distance..

I think it was incredibly silly of the protestants to hold their parade. I think to some extent they were asking for trouble. But that doesn't at all justify the violence of the simple minded fools, brainwashed by extremeist republicans.
