Chapter 17.

It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye ( Read more... )

Anyone can change if they choose to. But the deeper your sins the harder you have to work to change them. Redeeming yourself in the eyes of others isn't an easy thing. You just have to be dedicated.

The gods forgot to give us a better reason to motivate us into redemption than a reward of running water and electricity.

Redemption isn't something someone wants for you. You have to want that yourself, all the gods here are doing is getting urban renewal for free.

Interesting way to look at it. Very true, though. If I wanted redemption, I'd have to get it myself. But the gods demand it.

Well it 'does' make sense if you step back and look at it. Not all of us come from the same world, the rules that apply to my world may not apply to yours. Let's try something generic, for example say on one world everyone who uses their left hand is evil. Ok.
You get dumped here and there are people who are clearly not evil but are left handed.

The people of that world were they assume if you're left handed you're evil, have grown with a stimga ideal. Their trigger thought is that if the person is left handed then they 'must' be evil. So the person raised thinks that idea must be true. Being here lets them see that it is not true, that they are not condemned to one path simply because of the way they are born. Thus enabling them to go home and possibly begin to change the mindset of others around them.

Very true. Their sense of needing redemption seems universal though.

Well from the Darwin standpoint... It's because they have evolved to a state of such power that they feel they have every right to do whatever they want to whoever they want whenever they want. At least they're not grabbing us and killing us outright for not worshiping them or for not doing as told. (Some aren't.)

From the Religious standpoint... No god likes people who don't worship them and usually force them to change their alignment or torture with the grand theme of *I am THE God worship me now damnit*...

Somehow I'm thinking so long as we don't rock the boat too much we should be fine... Think of it like dealing with a woman. Never can figure out what makes one of them happy, you just stumble through it and one day you get a prize!

Except a true god grants people the choice. Free will.
