one giant step forward. (forty years ago king was assassinated, and fifty years ago there were places where obama couldn't vote. now we have a black president. who, incidentally, actually seems like he might be pretty good at his job.)
several smaller steps back. (gay marriage bans passed in arizona and florida, a ban designed to keep gay couples from adopting passed in arkansas, and prop 8 is almost definitely going to pass.)
several smaller-than-those steps forward. (anti-abortion propositions were voted down in several states, washington passed right-to-die, michigan passed medical marijuana and massachusetts decriminalized marijuana.)
it's amazing that in one night, progressive politics was able to take such a giant leap forward and so many smaller steps back.
keep the defeats in mind today even as you rejoice in the victories. amazing things have happened, but we can never stop fighting.
