yesterday I got a new tattoo. it is between my shoulder blades.(pictures of both the new and the old forthcoming, hopefully today.)
today I learned about washing my hair in the shower without getting shampoo on my back.
oh, the joys of tattoo possession.

also, I really need to talk to you. nothing's urgent or bad, but give me a call when you're free.

I also haven't spoken to you in god knows how long - how are you?
i'll be in Cambridge this summer, and i have this very vague, unsubstantiated notion that you used to live there? or you did some sort of summer program there? maybe oxford? am i confusing you with someone? anyway, according to my very possibly false memory, you really loved it there. let me know if i'm crazy.

your vague unsubstantiated notions are more or less correct. when I was fifteen and sixteen, respectively, I did summer programs in cambridge and oxford, respectively. they're amazing places, cambridge especially. I was at magdalene college. where will you be at and what will you be doing?

I'm working with a linguistics professor at King's, and the more time i spend here, the more i feel myself being pulled towards the black hole of academia. especially if you're at a place like this, being a professor is pretty sweet: the guy i'm working with spends roughly twice the amount of time punting/wandering the grounds/going to choir performances/chilling in the wine room as he does working.
anyway, what has been new with you? any plans emerging for after graduation?

I am also slowly being pulled towards the black hole of academia, which is the best answer I can give to your after-graduation question. I'm trying to decide whether to go into academia or education work (reform type stuff), and for me it really comes down to where I think I can be more socially responsible and productive, which is ... tough and complicated. Kind of how I'm sorting it out right now is that this summer and next year I'm writing my B.A. (big end-of-college research paper) and being a research assistant for an anthropologist, which is giving me a sense of what academia would be like, and I'm planning to try to work in education for a few years after I graduate. I feel like if I do both and see what both are like then I can make an informed decision down the line.
what about you? are you thinking academia, or what else?
