Greetings. My name is Nakahara Sunako, and for the past year and a half at most I have lived with four completely domestically-retarded dazzling creatures. By coincidence, they are all male. Not only is it difficult to cook for them, but I must also clean their rooms, do their laundry, scrub their floors, and iron their underwear.
And so, as my roommate Kyohei never makes New Years amendments, I am creating one for him. Anyone else who falls into this category, I highly suggest using my guide. Years of housekeeping have taught me a great deal about the ins and outs of the household.
1. To be a domestic male (or female), you must first clear your schedule. Or pick a day, such as Sunday, when nothing is going on and you have the whole day to prepare yourself for a long day of cleaning ( NOTE:Keep in mind, readers, if you do this on a weekly basis, then cleaning won't be as strenuous every week.)
2. De-Cluttering: Very important. If you cannot see the floor of your room, then it is time to follow this step. Search through your belongings. Look for things that you've held on to for along time but don't necessarily need. Get rid of them by throwing them away, giving them to charity, or even holding a yard sale. It's simple as that. But be sure to focus on what exactly you need to keep and what you don't need to keep, or you'll never throw anything away.
3. Dish Washing: If you have a problem with the dishes slipping out of your hands, use rubber gloves to ensure a good grip. Use a good dish soap (nothing too perfumed) that will cut through grease efficiently. Make sure the dishes don't sit around for too long, as the longer they sit, the harder it'll be to clean them. If that happens, soak them in warm soapy water for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.
4. Laundry: An important weekly ritual. You don't want your clothes smelling bad. Make sure you don't overload your washing machine OR dryer. Also, it's wise to separate your clothes according to color and delicacy. Heavy duty things can be washed in hot water, while delicates should be handwashed or on a gentle cycle in cold water. Fluff dry, unless the tag says differently.
5. Ironing: Never set the iron on too high. That calls for a disaster. Store it in a safe environment, and never keep it on for hours. Turn it off right after you use it. Don't press on your garment, as well; Always just sweep over it slightly with the iron. You don't want to burn a hole in it.
6. Scrubbing floors: I find the best solution to use when you have a tile or marble floor is a solution of vinegar and water. In bathrooms, a disinfectant should be used in place of vinegar, and if it's a wood floor, simply use window cleaner.
Thank you for joining me in this special edition of The Road to Becoming a Domestic Man (Or Woman). Next edition, I'll lead you through some of my favorite recipes.
Thank you Fuji and Bob-san for your Christmas cards, by the way ♥
And Kyohei, I expect to see results.
