Pretty Good Day

So I was sitting in seminary yesterday during a video watching the kids interacting a bit, and I thought "I really like this. I'm so glad I'm here."

Today we drew the vision of the Tree of Life on a 4'X 8' piece of cardboard. Then the kids looked up scripture references for the images they'd drawn, and they wrote the interpretation. It was fun and they will hopefully remember it better than if we just looked up scriptures and talked about it. I'm trying to do more hands-on application.

I'm also working on "Openers," a few minutes at the beginning of class where I ask questions about things they're interested in, get them all talking and excited, and they transition to the principle that relates to the opener questions. For example, tomorrow I'm going to ask them what they'd like to know about their future. That should generate a pretty lively discussion. Then we'll talk about Nephi's vision in 1 Nephi 13-15, and how he felt about the things he saw.

On Monday, we started out by talking about what they should be eating, when, etc. Everyone knew quite a bit about eating fruits and vegetables, eating breakfast, not drinking a lot of pop or eating at McDonald's, etc. Then I asked them if they were all healthy eaters. We talked about the difference between knowing and doing, and then they divided into groups and researched the difference between testimony and conversion. Hopefully they got the connection. In any case, asking some general interest questions about something they all have an opinion on really gets everyone talking and energized for the class.

It's time for me to be in bed. I need to be alert and excited at 6 am tomorrow!
