Bonds

Was listening to an interview with Jim Leyland this morning on WEEI. Leyland essentially said that if Bonds had been a media darling his whole career and kissed people's asses we'd all be running around saying we'd seen the greatest player in the history of the game.

I could not possibly agree with this sentiment more.

Bonds has been victimized by the fact that he is a generally disagreable person with a strong disdain for the media. Did Bonds use steroids? I'd say the likelihood is somewhere around 99.9%. But the fact of the matter is that what Bonds has accomplished in his career is still unprecedented. And he has dominated the game in an age where many of his peers were also abusing the exact same substances, including the pitchers that Bonds has owned, day after day. If the key to hitting 755 homers was to shoot some substance into your ass, we'd have hundreds, if not thousands of major league hitters with that many homers. Any Sox fans out there remember Manny Alexander? Remember how he got pulled over with a syringe and juice like 10 years ago? Yeah, I guess it didn't help him too much...

This is not to even mention that many of the accusations against Bonds' abuse of substances, were not even against the rules of the game. Folks like Gene Orza are the real criminals.
