Ruddock the Incarcerator
With only a blip of publicity yesterday our new federal government repealed the odious mandatory detention of illegal immigrants. We have regained another scrap of our collective humanity, sucked from our veins by the vampiric Howard government, hopefully not too late to rescue our reputation as fair and free.
The previous immigration minister Ruddock had the limpid gall to claim that the policy change was only made possible because of the success of the previous policy. Nevermind that repealing the policy only became necessary because of the horror it wrecked on the lives of desperate innocent people fleeing far worse conditions in the very same totalitarian states we were at the time busy invading. The hypocrisy is staggering.
Our government may well get many things wrong but it is steadily checking off the list of meanspirited symbols of moral vacuum that threatened to destroy our image in the eyes of the world.
