I went to the pharmacy today to buy some chewing gum - after banning gum a decade or so ago, the Singapore Government had to relent because of the Free Trade Agreement with the US and allow its sale but only in pharmacies. So I guess in Singapore gum  a controlled substance, like Prozac. I went to the pharmacy and pointed to the packets of gum that were neatly stacked behind the glass doors in the cabinet, next to drugs with unpronounceable names. The pharmacist took the gum out and produced a log book, where I had to fill in my name, my identity card number and signature. It was as if I were a heroine addict signing up for my daily dose of methodone.

It boggles the mind. Chewing gum is only sold with a pharmacist present, and only after you produce identification and sign a log book, while cigarettes are found at any convenience store or petrol station coast to coast, available to all and sundry without question. Hello? Is something wrong with this picture?
