Metric
Metric is a four piece band, composing of Emily Haines (lead vocals and synth), James Shaw (guitar and theremin), Josh Winstead (bass) and Joules Scott-Key (drums). They are a Canadian indie rock band originally formed in Toronto, but sometimes based in Montreal, New York City, London, and Los Angeles.
Metric released their first record, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? in 2003, and it gained the Juno Award nomination for Best Alternative Album.
Their second album, Live It Out was released in October, 2005, under Last Gang Records and was nominated again for the Juno Award and the 2006 Polaris Music Prize for Canadian Album of the Year.
In 2007, the first album Metric recorded, titled Grow Up And Blow Away was released, since it could not originally be released due to internal changes in the company they had recorded with.
In April of 2009, they released their fourth studio album, titled Fantasies known for the single "Help, I'm Alive" as well as "Sick Muse", "Gimme Sympathy", and "Gold Guns Girls". It received the 2009 Polaris Music Prize by Best Canadian Album of the Year.
Haines and Shaw have both worked with Broken Social Scene, another Canadian band, and Haines has been a guest on albums by Stars (who we'll see more of later).
The songs "Moster Hospital", "Police and the Private", and "Front Row" have been used on the TV show Grey's Anatomy and "Monster Hospital" also appeared in CSI: Miami. The song "Gold Guns Girls" was also featured in Gossip Girl, Zombieland, and Grey's Anatomy, as well as the EA Sports game FIFA 10. "Gimme Sympathy" (which references both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones) also played a part in Gossip Girl while "Help, I'm Alive" was featured in NBA 2K10, a game created by 2K sports.
Emily Haines has also released a solo album entitled Knives Don't Have Your Backs and an EP along with it called What Is Free To a Good Home? under the name Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton. Scott-Key and Winstead have their own respective side project, Bang Lime.
In Conclusion: Metric is awesome. And consistent. And have been around for 12 years (before they were Metric, they were Mainstream and released an EP in 1998). And Emily has an amazing voice. And they're just fantastic in general.

Stars is a five to six (still not sure about the details) piece band, also from Canada, mainly focused in Toronto. It consists of Torquil Campbell (vocals + guitar), Amy Millan (vocals + guitar), Evan Cranley (bass), Chris Seligman (keyboard), and Pat McGee (drums).
Formed in Toronto in 1998 by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman, Stars was later joined by Millan and Cranley, and though McGee has toured with them, he was never officially credited until their album released Set Yourself on Fire
The band's breakthrough single was the song "Ageless Beauty" from their 2004 album, Set Yourself On Fire, but they have other singles including "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead", "Elevator Love Letter", "Bitches in Tokyo", "Reunion" and "Take Me To The Riot".
Millan, Campbell and Cranley are also members of already mentioned Broken Social Scene, and though Seligman has worked with them, he has never been credited. Millan also has a solo career.
In Conclusion: I don't really know shit about this band. Why are Canadian bands never breaking up? "Take Me To The Riot" makes me dance.

Amy Millan - Skinny BoyStars' Last.fm ChannelAmy Millan's Last.fm ChannelMySpace And onto our third (and last, because I realized I really can't do this that easily) band, The Like!
The Like, formed in 2001 in Los Angeles, California, is a four piece and all girl band.
From left to right - Tennessee Thomas (percussion), Elizabeth "Z" Berg (lead vocals and guitar), Laena Geronimo (bass) and Annie Monroe (keyboard/organ).
The band's most recent member is Annie Monroe, introduced via @ilovethelike (the band's/Z's twitter) mid February of 2010
But before this, the band was made of three - Charlotte Froom (bass), Z Berg and Tennessee Thomas. They released one full length album in 2005, entitled Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? consisting of 13 tracks, beginning with the single "June Gloom".
Tennessee and Charlotte had been friends since youth, but despite this, in the summer of 09 it was pronounced that Charlotte had been kicked out of the band - the decision was not amicable, based on the song "Narcissus in a Red Dress" which was released on the band's MySpace, with a slightly confusing lyrics “you clever little charlatans” sounding dangerously like Charlotte-ans. The whole song seems to be about Charlotte, not surprisingly.
Before the version with Monroe, however, The Like had Reni Lane, who has her own solo project, in as the keyboardist. When they toured with Arctic Monkeys last summer, the band gained a lot more ground with the release of four new songs, and one, "Fair Game" made available for download straight from their MySpace.
Before graduating high school, they released three EPs and their song "(So I'll Sit Here) Waiting" was featured in the movie Thirteen. They eventually signed by Geffen Records and began to tour with bands including Phantom Planet and Maroon 5. They have also toured with Tori Amos and The Kings of Leon, as well as performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and at the O2 Wireless Festival in London. They also toured with Muse for a short time before going to London to support the band Razorlight.
Z and Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet have been especially close since this time, both members of the band JJAMZ (named for the five members first initials - James Valentine, Jason Boesel, Alex Greenwald, Michael Runion, and Z) along with James Valentine of Maroon 5.
Specimen 2 of Z and Alex's love/friendship. And Z's nipples.
Specimen 3 because they are both soooo pretty.
You may recognize the name of the band of Z's shirt. That is indeed Panic at the Disco's Honda Civic Tour t-shirt, released only to people who worked on the tour (which does not explain why Z is wearing it). When Phantom Planet signed to Fueled by Ramen and toured with Panic in 2008, this is when Z (allegedly) really met Ryan Ross, Panic's guitarist and lyricist.
The two have remained close friends and bandom is beginning to accept them - The Like fic is emerging! They have been accepted as one of the bands for bandom big bang! ...I wonder if she still wears that shirt to make fun of Ryan. Oh my god. I want fic of Z wearing that shirt. Oh my god. Don't ask.
See? Cuties. (totally unnecessary picture right there)
