Yesterday, one of my best friends in this world lost his battle with cancer. He was only 27 and an all around great guy. He was always there for me and i'll never EVER forget him. I love you Steven Michael Mackin.
Type your cut contents here.I met Steven online for the first time in 2002 while he was still living in San Francisco. I noticed this cute boy in the Kentucky yahoo chat room who had on a blue kentucky shirt and some guy lifting his shirt up from behind so you could see his belly :) I of course had to say hi. We chatted on and off for the next 2 years, never meeting face to face until Memorial Day weekend of 2005:
I had a long weekend and pricelined a sweet deal at the hyatt in downtown louisville. The first time i saw him in real person was in the Hyatt's parking garage, standing there with his leg brace and walker in...if i'm not mistaken...a navy blue shirt and camo cargo shorts (we all know this boy didnt wear denim shorts!) haha! I helped him with his bag and we went in to the hotel to chill for a bit. Both of us being BIG chicken wings fans, we headed out to one of the best wing places known to man (besides Hooters, of course) BW3's. Steven would argue with me that BW3's had the best wings but i always kept it real for my HOOTERS :) After SEVERAL 23 oz bud lites, and 50 (yes 50) wings, we headed back to the hotel to get ready to go out to his favorite dive, Tryangles. We proceeded to have an awesome time and both of us were good and hung over the next day...then i had to drive back to pikeville in all my hungoverness HAHA I actually have a pic of him that i snapped on that day with the cam on my phone:
After that day we started hanging out more and more. There was NOTHING in pikeville, ky, especially for a gay guy, so Steven and I would meet in louisville and go out to the bar on a pretty regular basis. He was honestly one of the first people who taught me it was ok to be gay and that there was more out there than what was shown on tv. For that I'm forever grateful. We went on a couple of trips together, most memorably the '06 Atlanta Trip :) We had a blast and he introduced me to so many cool people ;)
In February of this year I decided to move from kentucky to Raleigh, NC. He was totally against this and told me i'd regret it forever if i moved here. He also told me he'd never visit me here either :( But i had my reasons for moving, and he ended up accepting it. He came for a visit at the end of March this year and stayed a week. I got to introduce him to all my friends here. They, of course, loved him. He had that way with people.
The following are photos I have of him and I that i took during the time i knew him. These are from our camping trip in June '05, New Years Atlanta trip '06, and his visit to Raleigh in March 06, and then random pics i have of him and I that were took the other times we hung out in kentucky before i moved:
(he always HATED this pic HAHA)
I know this is a long post, but its a sort-of tribute to my pal, steven. I still can't believe he's gone... He always told me he'd die young, and i was always like "nah". Guess he proved me wrong.
Rest In Peace, buddy. I'll always hold a special place for you in my heart.
