Lloyd has been accurately described as an idealist for his ever-present desire to make things right, even if it might seem too large scale for him at first. The way that Lloyd is not an idealist is the fact that he does not stop at mere ideas - he puts action to his words and it is through his unbreakable will and determination, as well as his trust in his friends, that makes his ideas become a reality.
Lloyd is quite naïve in the beginning, something he admits to feeling himself. He matures quite a bit throughout the course of the game, understanding that not only is he capable of making mistakes, but that he must learn from them and continue walking on despite the humiliation or the consequences of his actions. He has a compassion that is near unrivaled and trusts people instantly on face value. This makes him very susceptible to betrayal, but even his betrayers are recipients of his lasting faith, considering he went so far as to tell one of his betrayers that Lloyd still trusted him, even as the betrayal was happening. To say that he is unaffected by these betrayals is an outright lie, and his usual response is burning humiliation for being tricked in addition to some expected anger, but he can never find it in himself to completely lose the trust he had in these individuals. He can never quite consider these traitors to be an enemy, unless of course there are lives lost and/or sacrificed in the process of the betrayal.
The betrayal and the suffering does not come without anger, though. While some call him a gentle idealist, others would describe him as a warmonger. Lloyd is quick to anger, prevailing the most during the first half of his adventure thanks mostly in part to the work of the Desians. The leading villain of the game would think of Lloyd as nothing more than a bloodthirsty ogre, accusing him of much more slaughter than he himself has committed. Untrue, Lloyd’s path is undeterred by the slander, but his swords remain ever ready nonetheless.
Besides a possible warmonger and a budding idealist, Lloyd is also what some might call a dunce. (: Although he excels in arts and crafts and physical work, Lloyd is not one for math, history, science… or anything else, really. Perhaps he would be if he applied himself, but the other downfall to Lloyd’s grades is his terrible attention span and liability to fall asleep in class. This persists through his journey, seeing as Lloyd enters each and every new location with burning enthusiasm but exits having long since burnt out, and looking forward to the next location all the more.
All in all, even while his aggressiveness can be a damper at times, Lloyd’s the sort of person that people can rely on when they need a close friend, or even a stranger who would lend them a hand free of charge. Just give him a toy to play with occasionally, and you’re all set.

“Okay, I think I got it,” started Lloyd, squinting at the chicken-scratch diagram he made for himself. His Totodile was sitting contentedly at his side, nosing into his trainer’s lap to try and catch a glimpse at his handiwork. Although he knew (or figured) that his Pokémon couldn’t read the graph, Lloyd tilted the paper toward him to read. “Fighting Pokémon are weak against Rock types, but strong when it comes to Psychic. And Psychic are…”
He paused, looking at his companion for some advice, but the little crocodile managed only to look unimpressed. It was still pretty early on in the journey, and most of the Pokémon that Lloyd had encountered were Normal or Flying types. Since he’d only had Totodile to start off with, he hadn’t been paying much attention when it came to the different types at all… but was getting the feeling that things would get very complicated very quickly if he slacked off, especially when it came to the Gyms. Did there really have to be so many of them?
Lloyd looked at his chart again. “… Wait, I have it mixed up. Psychic beats Fighting, and… ummm…” Completely stumped, he stared hard at the piece of paper as though his handwriting would magically rearrange itself and give away the correct answer. “I think… I think Fighting is super effective against Rock Pokémon…”
And suddenly, it clicked. “Ah!! Because fighters can break rocks in half with their heads and stuff, right?”
Totodile gave a little affirmative croak and Lloyd couldn’t help but laugh, feeling confident… even if he had to erase again to make adjustments on his chart. “Hey, that’s not bad at all! It’s really easy to figure out once you think about it a little.”
Now finished with his corrections, he held up the piece of paper again, satisfied. Feeling a nudge from his Totodile, he tipped the paper down for his viewing pleasure. “I know it doesn’t matter so much just yet, since it’s just me and you.” An affirmative and pretty cheerful chirp in return had Lloyd chuckling again. “So long as I know what your strengths and weaknesses are, that’s good enough for now, right?”
Totodile seemed to be in agreement. To demonstrate his new found knowledge, Lloyd placed the paper faced down in the grass and cleared his throat. “Right, so when it comes to you, it’s just like Undine and Volt, so that means Water’s weak to Electric. But it’s pretty good against Grass Pokémon, because Water helps things grow and-”
… wait, that didn’t make any sense. That couldn’t be right. Lloyd stopped himself short - partially also due to the loud croak of protest from his companion, and gave it another three seconds of thought before groaning and grabbing his sheet of paper.
A moment later, he tossed it in the air. “Gaahhhh, Water is weak to Grass!! Man, how do they expect me to learn all of this? This is a million times more complicated than the Summon Spirits…”
