Does the fact that I am gleeful over Foley's resignation and the GOP's complete and utter failure to do anything about his pervy ass in the first place make me a bad person?

I'm not mad at this guy. I heard he sent harassing emails. This doesn't look very harassing to me. I am definitely not in favor of old folks pushing up on kids, but there should be safe ways for young people to explore their sexuality without being fucking crazy monitored. It is a very personal thing. I kinda don't see the problem with a little harmless cybersex as long as it doesn't turn in to a RL interchange where the young man's well being would be in jeopardy.

As for Foley, while he might have needed to do this in a more discrete manner, I am not gonna jump on the moral witchhunt band wagon with these people on Capitol Hill. Tey ALL have skeletons and I everyone should be allowed to have their kinks and perversions (and even be open about them) if they are not harming anyone or endangering anyone's well-being.

Does the fact that the kid felt weird about it and reported it to authorities over a year ago change your mind at all?

I'd be curious to find out whether the kid asked him to stop. If he was asked to stop and continued harassing the young man, then he crossed the line. As I said, people should be allowed their perversions as long as they are not hurting anyone else.

The issue here for me is not perversion, it is harassment.

I'm sure you might disagree with me on this, but I do think the fact that the kid was a minor should have been reason enough for Foley to keep his mitts off the kid. I have no idea if the kid said no at any point, but I know that, were this a girl instead of a boy, and the girl didn't say no but indicated later on that she was uncomfortable with the situation, I wouldn't hold her responsible for not saying no, and I'm not holding the kid responsible for not telling Foley to fuck off. After all, s/he is in a position of relative weakness, compared to Foley, who has more power both in terms of position as well as age. I remember what I was like at that age, and I would have tried to play it off politely, even if I was disgusted inside. That's how I was raised, unfortunately, and I think the same goes for a lot of kids like me ( ... )

I typed this lengthy response but it somehow disappeared. Here are the points I made:

1) As far as I can tell he never had his "mitts" on anyone.

2) Unfortunately the power dynamics for a 16-17 year old boy are definite than they would be for a girl in this age group.

3) From what I've read, the salacious IM'sdidn't start until AFTER the boys had finished the page program which means that they were in no jeopardy of losing their jobs if they told the guy to take a hike or simple blocked his incoming IMs. Judging solely from the excerpt you linked to, the boy seemed to be under no pressure to be so forthcoming about his sexuality. While Foley was definitely more of the aggressor, the kid definitely wasn't "playing it off politely" by telling the guy who he wacked it into a towel.

4) While I am not embracing Foley as family (he is after all a Southern Republican closetcase fool), I'm not trying to kick him in the nuts either. He's just trying to do the white man pose, the realness, if you will. Unfortunately this time, he wasn't ( ... )

Goddamnit, why do you have to make such good points? :)

I still maintain that he's a creep, though, and I hope this causes lots of shit for the GOP. But that just might be my own personal pettiness at play here.

Sorry, I work for lawyers. :)

Yeah I hope the Dems take the GOP to the cleaners with this one...I have fingers crossed that they just take a few body blows without sinking into the whole boring sexual/moral discussion.

Agreed. The worst thing in the world would be if this turned into some gay-baiting thing.

Now I need to find some lawyers to work for so I can develop a mind like a steel trap, too....
