Sometimes I think I would be the happiest girl in the world if I had a yard full of southern magnolia, jacaranda and live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. I would just sit under them and let the petals fall onto my head, and I would never wash them out of my hair.

Yeah, I love spanish moss, but those redbugs have got to go! (Really, I just tell myself that spanish moss is home for lots of little animals and bugs, and it makes me feel a little less icked out by the bugs.)

I think I did read that story - isn't it a part of Girl Goddess #9? I saw my first jacaranda tree a few years after I had read that story, and once I did I totally understood why she used them so prominently in her imagery. Those trees are GORGEOUS. In fact, if I ever have a kid I might name her Jacaranda. I love them that much. (And then my kid would hate me, like I'm sure all of those kids of 70s hippies whose parents named them Rainbow and Moonbeam only to have them change their name in adulthood to something like Bob and Jane hate them. But whatever!)

jacaranda could be an awesome middle name, though! i've never actually seen a jacaranda tree in person, though--now i really want to! :)

i really want a house with a fence/wall covered in night-blooming jasmine. i dated a girl whose house was like that, and waking up with the smell of jasmine drifting through the window was beautiful.

Pinellas County is saturated with jacaranda. If you come through here during the spring you will see them everywhere.

Night blooming jasmine, is that like confederate jasmine? I only ask because the stairway leading to the upstairs apartments in our complex is covered with confederate jasmine, and the scent is heavenly. You walk outside of our apartment, and bam! you just get nailed by the scent of jasmine. So thanks for reminding me that I want jasmine, too. :)

well, with the draw of old-people-saturated beaches AND jacaranda trees, how can i resist coming down there? i'm itching for a road trip, and you're at the top of the list.

and i looked at pictures of confederate jasmine, which looks exactly the same as the jasmine i'm thinking of. it smells so gorgeous!

Sweet! Your ex-girlfriend is a lucky girl, living in a house where you can actually smell the jasmine inside. Awesome.

(I'm such a nerd for plants. I'm all excited because Chris and I are volunteering in two weeks to help plant sea oats and salt marsh plants at Fort De Soto. !!!)
