Memetics at work: Following days of internationally reported killings, rapes and gang violence inside the Dome, the doctor from FEMA - Beron doesn't remember his name - came prepared for a grisly scene: He brought a refrigerated 18-wheeler and three doctors to process bodies

40 years ago we didn't have any sort of federal plan to help areas devastated by very seasonally predictable natural disasters.
Forty years ago we didn't have lots of things, such as civil rights voting acts, legalized abortion, etc. Just because things were a particular way in the past hardly makes it desirable to go back to that time. Are you seriously arguing that just because something wasn't in place forty years ago, that it shouldn't be in place today? I can't imagine taking such a regressive stance towards anything.
I hardly consider people putting trust in their government to help them in a time of crisis (which, by the way, has been systematically undermined over the past several years by people who share your political philosophies that the only good government is a government small enough to be 'drowned in a bathtub') to be a sign of weakness.

Forty years ago we didn't have the Patriot Act nor did we have universal civil rights. Does that mean we need to have the Patriot Act today? My point was simply that local and state governments, agencies that are the most in touch with the needs of the state and local people, handled these things.
This dependence on a huge central imperial federal government is bad in my eyes because I fear its power. I cannot even sit down and talk to my US Rep. He's (John Lewis) a bit out of touch. However, I have had a good talk with my State Rep.
As far as people that share my political philosophy, I can hardly align myself with the current administration any more than I could align myself with the political philosophy of the current Democratic party.
And if the Bush administration is the administration of small government, I'm a Chinese aviator. This guy makes me long for the small government policies of Clinton.
This guy makes me long for the days that scandal meant the Prez just got a hummer and a rim job from some Jewish chick.
