i'll admit i have a soft spot for meg cabot... even though her books tend towards the inconsequential chicklit, it's light and enjoyable. i actually liked the first few* princess diary books** and the mediator series, and her teen harlequin books were HILARIOUSLY the same***. i hadn't read any of her adult books though, but i was curious to see her take on the vampire trend. the answer?
meg cabot read the twilight series and went "what the WHAT. i could write better than this with one hand tied behind my back" and proceeded to. essentially, the main character is a sorta-psychic writer for a soap opera that's cashing in on the vampire trend (which she hates because its misogynistic) who accidentally falls in love with a vampire. [spoiler alert - highlight if curious] in the end, he of course wants to turn her so he can protect her and her magic blood, and she turns him down because hey, she LIKES sunshine, and even though she loves him she has higher aspirations for her life and she can help save other people so she goes to work for the vatican-endorsed vampire hunters. and because he loves her he'll watch and protect her and if she changes her mind he'll be waiting, but hey, he's a vampire prince and he has other things to do too. like enforce the no-killing-humans rule (none of this "vegetarian" nonsense; they can buy from blood banks like everyone else, or drink without killing. they just don't like animal blood because it doesn't keep them looking as pretty), quashing the rebellion, etc.[/spoilers]
anway, through this all she keeps making little jabs at the twilight series, which i greatly appreciate. highlights--
[protagonist, to awesome best friend]"even though these guys admit over and over wanting to kill us," meena went on, "the idea that they're nobly restraining themselves from doing so is supposed to be attractive? excuse me, but how is knowing a guy wants to kill you hot?"
"the fact that he wants to but doesn't makes some girls feel special," leisha said simply.
[a vampire hunter, to a victim]
"...wouldn't you like that? you could never have babies with felix [the vampire]."
"vampires can have babies," sarah informed him. "i read it in a book."
"yes," alaric said, feeling annoyed. "well, in books, the vampires struggle nobly against themselves not to bite you, because they love you so much. but that didn't exactly happen, did it? so the books aren't really very accurate, are they?"
[protagonist again]"and what's with vampires always wanting to make the pretty girl their undead girlfriend? or worse, not wanting to make her his undead girlfriend. and then she talks him into it, to the thrill of the audience. because being dead and with someone is apparently a happier ending than being alive and alone. only how is being dead a happy ending?" her eyes flashed. "believe me. being dead is never a happy ending."
XD so yes, i quite enjoyed the book. anddddd it's evidently the beginning of a series so i guess we'll see where it goes? maybe i'll pick up more of her adult books... after i finish my current book backlog, anyway.
*i stopped after they spent an entire book on "will my boyfriend take me to prom??" answer: of course, you ninny.
**BOOKS. not movie. that was when i hated anne hathaway because instead of the kick-ass unwilling princess in combat boots, we get a ditzy airhead who is an unwi--wait, FREE MAKEOVERS?
and then they had the gall to destroy ella enchanted, once again with anne hathaway's face.
not sure if i've forgiven her, but as long as she stays away from my books i think we can call it a truce.
***i've mentioned these before, but... two half-naked (by victorian standards, anyway) escapes from windows after being locked into mr. wrong's house, rescued by mr. right in his fortuitously passing carriage probably in the rain...
ps-- jess, it's coming. really!
