Molly let herself into Cameron’s apartment.

“Cam?” she called out, slipping off her coat. If she knew her boyfriend (and she did), he was running late again. Which was why she was meeting him here for whatever he had planned for Valentine’s Day.

She started down the hall to the living room. “Cam?” she called out again. She felt herself step on something, and looked down, noticing a trail of rose petals on the floor. She smiled. He didn’t go for over the top romantic gestures often, but when he did, the sky was the limit.

As she got closer, she heard the sound of low music playing and she spied the flicker of candlelight through the open doorway.

She stepped into the living room and her eyes went wide with shock.

Around the room, votive candles burned brightly and bouquets of red and pink roses were scattered on every flat surface. In the center of the room was a beautifully set table, with more candles and flowers. A bottle of champagne sat on ice, just waiting to be poured.

And standing next to it, heart in his eyes, was Cameron.

“Cam,” she breathed, hand raised to her mouth in shock. “What is all this?”

He smiled, stepping forward to take her hand, drawing her into the room. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Molly.”

“Cameron,” she started, but was cut off by him drawing her into a lingering kiss.

When he drew back, her mind was so clouded that she let him pull out a chair and seat her without further comment.

He poured the champagne handing her a flute, and raising his own in a toast. “To us,” he said simply, clinking his glass against hers.

They both drank, Molly eyeing him over the rim of her glass.

Setting it back on the table, she asked, “I have to know, how did you do all this?”

He pouted for a second, setting his own glass back on the table. “What, you don’t think I’m capable of doing all this on my own?”

“I love you, but no. Were there fairies involved?”

Cameron nodded. “Fairies, definitely.”

“And would those fairies have been named Lana?”

“I’ll never tell,” he said mysteriously, walking into the kitchen, she presumed to check on their food.

“Ah, but she will.”

He stuck his head out from the kitchen. “That’s what you think.”

She laughed and took another sip of champagne, looking around and admiring the room. She couldn’t believe he’d gone to all this trouble. It was so sweet.

“A penny for your thoughts?” he asked, coming back into the living room carrying too plates.

“I was just thinking about how amazing you are. How amazing this is.”

He grinned at her, setting the plate down in front of her. “Tell me more. I insist.”

She looked down, expecting some sort of extravagant meal in keeping with the ambiance he’d created.

What was actually on the plate was a cheese burger and French fries.

“Cameron,” she laughed, looking up to see him grinning at her, laughter in his eyes. “What is this?”

“You mean you don’t recognize the gourmet meal we had on our first date?” he teased, sliding into the chair across from her. “I’m hurt, Mol. Deeply.”

“Cameron!” She looked down at the food, and then back at him. “Are they as good as the one’s at Kelly’s?”

He shrugged. “I make no promises. I did have Lucas write down step by step instructions, but as for the results…”

“Well, I guess we’ll see.” She picked up the burger and took an experimental bite.

Cameron watched her face carefully for a reaction. “Is it okay?”

“It’s great,” Molly said with some surprise. “Maybe you missed your calling,” she teased, taking another bite.

“Haha,” he said, digging into his own food.

They ate slowly, leisurely, holding hands and flirting unrepentantly with each other.

When the last French fry had been eaten, Cameron topped off their champagne, and retreated into the kitchen to get dessert.

“Are you sure I can’t help?” Molly called out to him.

“Positive,” he said, emerging from the kitchen with an elaborate hot fudge sundae and two spoons. He set it down in front of her with a flourish, watching for her reaction.

She laughed. “You really did recreate the menu, didn’t you?”

He nodded. “I did my best.”

“Not that I’m complaining, but why the nostalgia?” Molly asked, taking a spoonful of whipped cream.

“Well,” Cameron started, suddenly nervous. “It’s our beginning. And I thought we should celebrate that now, when we’re at the start of another beginning.”

“Another beginning?” Molly looked confused. “What are you-“ her voice broke off and her eyes went wide as he bent down on one knee in front of her. “Cameron…” she breathed.

“This is the part where you don’t talk for awhile, okay?”

She nodded. “Okay.”

He reached out for her hand. “Molly, I love you,” he began. “I’ve loved you for so long that I can’t remember what it feels like to not love you, and even if I could remember, I wouldn’t want to.”

Her eyes filled with tears, and she blinked trying to keep them at bay.

He pulled a small black velvet box from his pocket and flipped open the lid, revealing the diamond solitaire that lay nestled inside.

“Molly,” he said, nerves in his voice and heart in his eyes. “Will you marry me?”

She couldn’t hold the tears back any longer, and they started falling down her cheeks. She couldn’t speak, so overcome was she.

“Molly?” Cameron’s voice cracked. “Where you going to answer my question?”

She nodded, throwing herself into his arms, tears still streaming down her cheeks.

“I’m going to take that as a yes,” he decided, plucking the ring from the box and slipping it onto her finger. As he slid it home, he raised her hand to his lips, kissing it gently. “There, now you can’t take it back.” He brushed the tears away from her cheeks as best he could. “Why are you crying?”

She laughed, despite the tears, finding her voice. “I don’t know. I love you, Cameron, and yes, of course, I want to marry you.” She looked down at her ring and then back up at him, love shining in her eyes. “I love you,” she repeated.

“That’s really good, because you’re stuck with me now.” He grinned, and leaned forward to kiss her, bringing his hands up to cup her damp, tear-stained skin.

They kissed deeply, lingeringly, pouring all their emotion into the kiss, drawing back only when the need to breathe became too great.

He looked into her eyes and found them still full of unshed tears. “More tears, Mol? You’re going to give me a complex.”

She sniffled, blinking them back. “I always cry at happy endings, you know that. Why are you surprised?”

“Ah, but this is a beginning, remember?” He kissed her again, drawing her to her feet. “A happy beginning. So no more tears.”

She rolled her eyes and laughed, jumping into his arms. “A happy beginning, I like the sound of that.”

“Good,” he murmured, starting to walk down the hall to his bedroom. “Because that’s what you’ve got.”

And it was.
