So tonight was Thunder Over Louisville, and let me just say that the 75 degree weather and clear sky made it an absolutely perfect day for it. So perfect in fact that a new attendance record was set today with an estimated 800,000 people coming down to the waterfront to watch. Thunder Over Louisville is the largest air show and fireworks display in the world for those that may be clueless as to what I'm talking about. I didn't get to see much of the air show since the planes do not fly over my new house but my favorite the Stealth Bomber wasn't here this year anyway. Despite arriving later than I would have liked, we scored a spot right on the river. I mean I could have jumped right into the Ohio River if I wanted (not that I would want to take a leisurely swim in that or anything...). This would have been a feat during a regular year but considering the fact that there was a record crowd and the fact that I arrived late this was nothing short of a miracle. The show was amazing as usual. The fireworks that look like a colorful waterfall pouring off the sides of the bridge is always my favorite. People say oh you can just watch it on tv but I LOVE being there up close to watch it. I could actually feel the fireworks vibrating in my chest. Then the fireworks become so big in the sky that they look like they will just fall on my head. I feel so tiny compared to the exploding balls of color, and yet its refreshing. The drunken guys standing behind us to watch the fireworks were almost as amusing as the show itself. They belted out the country-themed songs, they danced around in some warped version of a line dance, yelled at people to get out of their way only to crack up laughing, and they even yelled out things like "Those motherfuckin' fireworks are sweet!" and "Look at that! That's the shit!" during the most random times during the show. Oh the amusement this brought me. And at the end of the night the fatigue from walking and standing for hours, the wading and fighting through a crowd of 800,000, and the nearly three hours stuck in traffic is all worth it. Now the Kentucky Derby Festival and all the wonderful events it has to offer are officially under way. Here's to hoping that members of the BSB return again this year so that I can maybe finally get my opportunity to meet them for once.
