In the mid to late 1980s, USA's NEW JERSEY NETWORK, a Public Broadcasting Station, made a documentary with many stars interviewed...and a good many fans too. Anyway Matthew Waterhouse in a snazzy red button down shirt was interviewed, too. More...
His hair was long but sort of on the thinning side or thinned out and seemed plastered to his head. He spoke about how with the Tom Baker Doctor, he was more like a student and learning, and the Doctor was more like a teacher to Adric yet fun and liked having him around. He also felt that the Doctor looked at Adric as he himself was when he was younger. Matthew went to say that as Adric could be a bit annoying and irritating, as intelligent people sometimes are, to others, that that was probably how the Doctor was when he was Adric's age. He also said that Peter's Doctor was not as all confident as the Fourth Doctor and a lot more like Adric! And as is the case, Matthew claims, people don't really like people that are alot like themselves and therefore the 5th Doctor really didn't like Adric all that much, not that he felt the 5th hated Adric but the relationship changed and there was a lot more friction between them. They were too much alike, he said.
My own feelings were made well known. In a scene in VISITATION, the Doctor claims the fire should run its course. Adric asks what he means by that..and the Doctor answers with the silly and now-CURSE OF FATAL DEATH-made fun of line, "I'll explain later." or something like that. He was always doing that stuff to Adric and not bothering to explain anything. In fact, I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT HE MEANT.
