Thanks again for recording this, Luzula -- I finally managed to track down a computer with speakers connected and listen to it! It's the first time I've ever had a podfic recorded for one of my stories, and I don't listen to radio talk programmes/audio books, so it was an entirely new experience for me. It was very pleasant to hear the story at a speaking pace as, on the rare occasions when I reread my past stories, I tend to skim the text rather quickly
( ... )
Thanks for giving me your thoughts on it! I'm so used to listening to podfic that I hardly notice anymore when a man's POV is read by a woman, but I can understand that it feels strange at first. And I get that it can feel strange to listen to your own story read by somebody else.
It was actually partly Flint's POV that made me record this one--I thought it'd be a challenge to record it. And re-listening, I notice a few places where I sound awkward to my own ears. Ah well, you live and learn. Hopefully I'll record more Earthsea stories, yes. : ) I have one other Earthsea podfic recorded, from a few years ago.
Actually, after I'd posted the above, I read the story out aloud to myself for the first time -- the rural accent to some of the dialogue is pretty challenging and could have been better written. (I think of the Gontish accent as Yorkshire, though obviously LeGuin must have something else in mind!)
I must listen to your recording of Altariel's story -- I love the original to bits.
Dialects are not my strong suit, I have to say! (You probably noticed that I have a foreign accent--I'm from Sweden.)
Listening to "The Inner Dark", I notice that I've changed my reading style since then. I remember being really focused on not reading too fast, and in retrospect that led to my sentences being a bit chopped up and not hanging together as they should. I've since noticed that as long as one leaves enough space between sentences, it's usually okay to read the sentences themselves fairly quickly.
