In the Morlock Alley, Kitty is being dragged out in a tattered wedding dress. Above, at Bellevue Hospital, Storm, Wolverine, and Rogue are confirming Kitty's body. Wolverine gets the undertaker dude to leave and says that's not Kitty. Storm wonders who is responsible. (Wolverine and the Morlocks haven't met, so they don't know about his ability to identify people by scent and he doesn't know their scents. I like this exchange when Wolverine says it's not Kitty: Rogue: "You're crazy, Wolverine!" Wolverine: "Maybe -- but I'm also right." Pretty characteristic.)
At the mansion, Nightcrawler is checking Colossus for a heartbeat. He can't find one, but isn't sure if that's normal for his metal form. Professor X is hit by another scanning wave. (That's the Beyonder, once more.)
In the Morlock Alley, Kitty is being married to Caliban. She sees everything as a nice wedding, but shakes off the effect. Callisto reminds her that she swore to stay with Caliban forever if he helped her. Caliban is horrified that he disgusts Kitty, but Callisto is enjoying her unhappiness. Kitty wants to go back and help Colossus, but Callisto wonders why they should believe her this time. Kitty flees and a hideous Morlock child lost in the tunnels. She leads him back and agrees to do whatever Callisto wants if she'll help Colossus. Masque is to change her face to symbolize her rejection of her past life. He toys with her cruelly before Callisto asks him to stop. (That Morlock child is Leech, who stops the powers of nearby mutants. Not exactly a popular power in a community of mutants. He becomes prominent in Louise Simonson titles: X-Factor, New Mutants, Power Pack.)
Callisto prepares to marry Kitty and Caliban, but Wolverine, Rogue, and Storm show up. Storm and Callisto tussle. Leech drops onto Storm, removing her power. Rogue and Wolverine fly in and lose their powers too, but Wolverine gets ready to use his claws. The Morlocks decide they can't interfere on Callisto's behalf, since she's in a leadership duel, and don't want to get too close to Leech. Kitty finally convinces them that she's there under her own power. (One of the nameless Morlocks in the crowd appers to be Ape, who shows up in Louise Simonson stories.)
The X-Men bring the Morlock Healer back to the mansion. Rogue drains Colossus' powers, becoming afflicted with the same injuries he has. The Morlock Healer works quickly to heal Colossus's deadly wounds, now that he's reverted back to flesh. Kitty gives Illyana a letter for her parents and one for Colossus, then goes underground. Caliban realizes that she can never be happy with him and releases her. The end!
Overview: A decent story. We get the first issue by long-term inker, Dan Green, here. There is a recurring theme of teenagers loving an adult, or something similar, throughout Chris Claremont's run -- Kitty and Colossus, Caliban loving Kitty, Cannonball and Lila Cheney, Cypher and Psylocke... I'm not sure what to make of it. I guess it's a topic of interest to the target audience, but it seems a little dodgy to me. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Next: What's happening in New Mutants: Magma and Selene! Professor X regains his ability to walk! Magik joins the New Mutants! Then Kitty accompanies Doug Ramsey (Cypher) to the Massachussetts Academy, while the X-Men are off to Secret Wars! (I don't actually own most of Secret Wars, so that part will be very brief!)
