In an foolish attempt to create a meme, I would like to suggest the following: go to your bookshelves and read the first sentence (after dedications and stuff) of the first book on a shelf. Now read the last sentence of the last book on that shelf. Do it for all your shelves full of books! I told you it was dorky. Probably more work than most people want to put forth too. Here is mine. (I've excluded introductions, forwards, and afterwards, and 'About the Authors.')
Shelf 1 (RPG books):
First: Well, here it is, Deities and Demigods, the latest addition to the Advanced D&D volumes.
Last: Notes: Granted by Auril Frostmaiden of the Forgotten Realms setting.
Shelf 2 (oversized and reference):
First: It had snowed heavily.
Last: Now the films are more the way I intended them to be.
Shelf 3: (small paperback fiction):
First: After so much time has passed, I feel obliged to write this down.
Last: Children of the Camp are we, / Serving each in his degree; / Children of the yoke and goad, / Puck and harness, pull and load.
Shelf 4: (general fiction and children's books):
First: Pioneers used to entertain themselves by telling scary stories.
Last: "I was great."
Shelf 5: (non-fiction, mythology, and folklore):
First: Nobody knows when our ancestors first saw dragons.
Last: ["]The law of the conservation of the mass of a system becomes identical with the law of conservation of energy..."
Shelf 6: (classics, etc.)
First: The year 1866 was marked by a bizaare situation, a phenomenon unexplained and inexplicable that probably no one has yet forgotten.
Last: ["]Someday the true story may be told."
Shelf 7: (trade paperbacks)
First: You are Iron Fist.
Last: I don't think anyone besides Commander Bison truly knows.
Bonus points to anyone who actually identifies any of those -- except Deities and Demigods! ;)
