I dunno if you've been reading my tweets as of late, but I just need to vent as to why the gay community in Las Vegas is just a lost cause. Not only is the community center just pointless (it's basically an HIV tax shelter) but there's no outreach or an attempt to provide a neighborhood or just a feeling of belonging. It's bad enough this city is loaded with cultureless brash people, does it need to filter all the way down to the microcultures too? The one failure this city overlooks is that there's absolutely nothing that goes beyond a flash in the pan. And I have every right to say this, because I lived here all my life, and just watched the ship slowly list to the point that it's taking on water across the bow. Hence why all the citizens are yelling and scrambling to the life rafts, abandoning their belongings and running just with their life.
And who pays for this? Ding! All the people caught in the riffraff who are trying desperately to salvage anything that's left. Las Vegas needs something else. It needs something other than these tits-in-your-face solutions that die out in a fortnight. I think the solution lays in the people of the city, and it's not going to come from the outside. External investment is dead, and there needs to be more attention to the needs of the people here and now. So how does this have anything to do with the gays you ask? I'll put it simply like this: make us something desirable. I'm tiered of our 'community' making the people an afterthought. If you want this city to be a map, you need to compete for it and grab the front runners by the balls and tell them you're a force to be reckoned with! Don't bow out for TWO MONTHS because New York pride us in the summer. People are LEAVING this city to go be proud somewhere else.
I know it's hard to feel happy when the ship is sinking, but wouldn't you like to give them hell, and just maybe bring some of their good fortune our way. Las Vegas has a chance to be great again, and putting ourselves on the shelf for months on end with everyone else is having a good time would do nothing more that shooting itself in the foot. We keep pissing and moaning about the vacuum of culture, and yet turn up out noses whenever a very juicy and ripe opportunity passes by. Well guess what, when you burn enough bridges, you eventually get stranded on the island.
