But there *are* no smokestacks in Lower Manhattan.

Steve's voice on the Mp3 Experiment track said to point to the ugliest cloud in the sky. I was running late, and as I sprinted across Vesey Street, I pointed at the sickly gray smoke seeping up into the sky from what I figured was a chimney or smokestack over what I didn't realize till then was a condemned building across the street. There weren't any other clouds in the sky. People on the bike path turned to look where I was pointing. I thought I was so clever, because they thought I was pointing at something important when it was really just ugly chimney smoke.

On the way back to the subway an hour later the sirens were blaring and traffic was stopped so that emergency vehicles could get through. The plume of smoke had thickened. We went to Century 21. It was packed. I bought a green wristlet with an apple on it for $8. Business as usual at Ground Zero as it went up in flames again, six years later.

I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around this. Why did it feel so normal, and at such close range? This should not have been.
