author's note: Written for shoot_the_curl, where the lovely ratherastory prompted me with Beatles lyrics! Then itskaylie told me I should pair Steve with a certain actor, and this resulted. Title means surprise - at least, that's what the internet tells me! Unbeta'd, so feel free to point out mistakes.

Danny pokes his head into Steve's office on a quiet Friday afternoon. He looks confused.

"There's a guy here looking for you."

Steve doesn't look up from his paperwork. He's so close to being done. "Who is it?"

"I don't know. He says he's an old friend of yours. He's about six foot, maybe over, looks sort of like Wolverine. Y'know, dark hair, rugged, sorta..." Danny gestures to his shoulder, indicating something wider. "Big."

Amused, Steve glances up. "Dark hair, rugged, and... what is that, big? Like broad shoulders?" He rolls his own shoulders, raises his eyebrows. "That's not a great description. I feel like you're talking about me."

"Yeah, well, if they put like three of you together, you might equal this guy."

"What's he want?" Steve finally gets up from his desk, coming around to stand in front of Danny.

"To see you, obviously. He said his name was James?"

Steve's heart stop in his chest and he pushes past Danny, looking at the man standing in the entrance of their headquarters. James looks up and for a moment, it's like no time has passed since they last saw each other.

But as Steve walks closer, he sees threads of gray in James' hair, a ragged scar bisecting his eyebrow and running along his temple, extra wrinkles around his eyes; they remind him of just how long it's been.

Steve's changed too, but in less obvious ways. He wouldn't have hugged James before, couldn't have, but now he doesn't even think twice. He wraps his arms around those broad shoulders and nearly clings.

He knows all eyes are on them, but James doesn't hesitate either. Steve's enveloped in a warm embrace that does awful things to the walls he's been building since his father's death. He takes a shuddery breath and moves away slowly.

"It's, uh." Steve clears his throat, catches sight of James' huge smile and grins right back. "It's been way too long."

"Damn near two years," James says. The way he's looking at Steve makes his heart want to burst out of his chest.

No one can make Steve feel like a stupid, infatuated kid except James.

Chin clears his throat politely and Steve breaks their gaze.

"Guys, this is James Bennett. He's a friend from the Navy. James, this is my team. Chin, Kono, Danny, and Lori."

They all great James kindly, though Danny looks suspicious (muttering something about Nick, if Steve's not mistaken), and Steve gestures towards the parking lot. "I'm gonna head out. Everyone's got the weekend off. Danny, you can finish my paperwork, right?"

Steve's gone with James before Danny can start yelling.

The drive to Steve's place is quiet, but James' hand comes to rest on his thigh and doesn't move. It takes all of Steve's concentration to focus on the road and not the way his dick is swelling in his pants.

"I'd say I'm sorry for the last two years of no contact, but you know what my excuse is and I think the serious conversation can wait," James says, when Steve pulls in and finally looks over at him.

"I thought you were dead," Steve says, and ignores the way his voice cracks. James smirks at him.

"You really think I'd go down that easy? C'mon, Steve, you know me better than that."

Steve shoves at him lightly before getting out of his truck and leading James towards the door.

Of course James is on him the minute the door closes behind him, grabbing at his hips and kissing him swiftly. Steve feels like he's being devoured for a few moments before the kiss slows down. James' hands slip under his shirt, calloused fingers catching on his skin and making him shiver.

He swears no one can get a reaction out of him like James can.

There's a huff of laughter against his lips as James pulls away. "Damn it, McGarrett. I didn't come here to fuck you up against the door."

"I got a couch," Steve says, gesturing towards the living room.

James rolls his eyes. "Where's your bed? I don't think we've used one of those before."

Getting James in his bed is better than Steve ever thought it'd be. The sun beats down on his warm sheets, highlighting all the best parts of James in a way Steve's never seen before. He's used to tents in the middle of the woods, miles from anywhere, whenever they could get away.

Turns out James is a fucking tease. He couldn't be, before, they didn't have enough time to take it slow. It was always rushed and rough, however they could get it.

Steve feels like he's being taken apart, piece by piece, by James' big hands and careful mouth. He's not used to laying back and just letting it happen - it's just been Catherine, lately, and they were always fighting for top.

"Shhh," James says, at one point, and Steve realizes he's been mindlessly begging for more. James has three fingers in him, opening him up easily, even though this is one thing they've never done before. "Relax, Steve."

"Fuck you," Steve gasps out, clenching down until James growls at him. "Just, fuck, get in me, okay?"

James runs his free hand down Steve's side, like he's soothing him. It works. "Don't worry, this is gonna happen."

Just as James gets a condom on and starts to push in, Steve's phone goes off. It's right by the bed, still shoved into his cargo pants, and the last thing Steve wants to do is answer it. But it's Danny's ringtone and who the hell knows what's happened now.

"I'm sorry," Steve says, kissing James before he grabs his phone. "Danny, what is it?"

James doesn't look put out - he doesn't even pull away. He just grinds the head of his cock into Steve until his breath catches audibly.

"Steve? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, I'm just wondering what the hell you want. Didn't I just take the weekend off?"

"Forgive me for being a little worried when some guy shows up and you disappear with him. That's a little weird, okay, even for you. The team, y'know, all of us, we're worried."

Steve's hand clenches around the phone, his other digging into James' shoulder as he settles on top of Steve and grinds their dicks together. James' heavy balls drag over Steve's thigh and he wants nothing more than to drop to his knees and suck on them.

"He's... he's just an old friend, okay? A good friend."

James laughs above him and twists one of his nipples. Steve jerks but holds back a sound.

"Chin might have looked him up. We didn't get much because there's so much classified about this guy's life he might as well be you. Is he your genetically engineered clone or something?"

"You've been watching too much sci-fi, he doesn't look anything like me. Besides--"

Before Steve can stop him, James grabs the phone from Steve and repositions himself, dick dragging along Steve's wet, open hole.

"Steve's a little busy right now, you should call back later."

"James, I swear--" Steve starts, but James shoves into him and it's like Steve's breath is driven out of him to make room for James' dick.

He can hear Danny ranting, voice tinny and high-pitched on the phone, and if Steve didn't know that Danny would come bursting into his house in about ten minutes, Steve would hang up on him.

James is thrusting smoothly into him, jolting Steve's body slightly with each push, and it takes him a couple tries to grab his phone from where James set it down.

"--I will come over there, I swear to god, if you've hurt him--"

"If you come over here, you're gonna see a lot more of me than you've ever wanted to."

Maybe it's not the most elegant way of coming out, but it works to shut Danny up long enough to Steve to hang up and toss his phone on the floor. He grabs at James' shoulders and pulls him down into a kiss.

James laughs into it, his steady thrusts going ragged when Steve licks into his mouth.

"They won't interrupt us again, right?"

Steve smirks up at him. "I'm not making any promises."

They don't get interrupted, though, and after a couple orgasms, a shower, and some ham and pineapple pizza that almost makes James come again, they sprawl on the couch, Steve stretched along the length with his feet in James' lap and James' legs propped on the coffee table.

"I heard about your dad about a month after it happened. I wanted to call, but--"

"I know you were too deep for contact, man. You don't have to explain it to me." Steve pulls his legs back, moves closer and settles with one foot on the floor and the other tucked under him. "But I heard your cover got blown and no one could find you..."

James reaches out and rests a hand on his leg, giving him an easy smile. "I made it out after a couple days of pretty intense questioning."

"You mean torture," Steve says.

"Whatever. Nothing I couldn't handle. I gave them some false intel, escaped when they finally fed me because someone was stupid enough to give me a steak knife, trekked through some shitty areas until I found an army base."

James grins at him and Steve smirks back. "You're a real lucky one, aren't you?"

"I think I am." James presses a kiss to his mouth. "After that... I decided I'm too old for this shit."

"You're 39."

"I'm done, Steve."

Steve's almost afraid to ask what comes next. It's not like they were ever serious when they were stationed together, but there's something between them that's not going away, even with distance time and time between them. He's not sure he wants to let him go again, as lame as that sounds.

James seems to sense what Steve can't express, because he grabs both sides of Steve's face and kisses him firmly. "I'm working at Pearl Harbor now."

Steve pulls back and blinks. "You're staying?"

"If you want me to."

He takes a moment to consider it. He's sure his team already knows what's going on between them. They weren't exactly subtle, and after the call with Danny, well, there's no way they're keeping this a secret. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is no longer an issue, anyway, so Steve doesn't think he even wants to.

"Yeah," he finally says. "I want you to."
