SPINY-BACK ORBWEAVER

First of all, isn’t that just the neatest name?
And isn’t this the strangest looking spider?
And I’m pretty sure this is a female because it is so big. Males are smaller.

These are quite common here, but the only places I’ve ever seen them is on my nature walks. When I saw my first one, I was so amazed. I immediately came home and looked it up; because I wasn’t even sure it was a spider, some oddity with this extremely colorful plate of armor on its back.

Well, recently, one actually moved in the atrium secret garden! At first her web was up pretty high, and I could pass under without even looking, but the other night she decided to expand her web, and when I opened the gate the next morning, with the sun shining on it, I could see she had attached a new web addition to the gate. It doesn’t seem to break or harm the web when I open the gate, it just seems to stretch and raise the web up, so I can get under it without touching it. How nice of her to think of me.

I don't know what the white stuff is, maybe remnants of her spinning, but it is all over the huge web.

I've taken other pictures in the woods before, but this is the best picture ever!
