Like the rest of the country, temperatures were dropping here. It was quite breezy; highs about 60 and no sun broke through the thick cloud cover all afternoon.
I headed out to get some green beans at Geraldson’s, but found they were closed when I got there. I went down the road to Robinson Preserve and then to Palma Sola Botanical Park for a little walk around. It was an interesting light for taking pictures in mid afternoon, something I never do, but it was so overcast that I thought I’d give it a try.
I was standing on a bank at Robinson looking out over the water and all of a sudden this young Wood Stork came wading along right in front of me . . . all alone. One thing I noted was his head was covered with feathers (not bald yet) and I guess those are lots of pin feathers on his wings. And, in the second picture you can see he hadn't gotten his long humanlike nails yet either.
Gosh, I have never had such a strong urge to want to comfort a bird before. I was so close to him that I had to back up a bit to get some pictures. He was so forlorn and vulnerable looking to me that I wanted to scoop him up in my arms. Oh, just look at those eyes! I’m sure the gloominess of the day and the fact that no one else was to be seen, help set the mood for my feelings.
