Here’s something that I have always wondered about and so I looked it up the other day: Causes for the feeling or sensation of a lump in your throat.
Simply put, doctors are not sure what causes globus sensation. It may involve increased muscle tension in the muscles of the throat or just below the throat or it may be due to gastro esophageal reflux, or maybe something even way more serious. I’m going to dismiss those causes and go with something else they said: The sensation sometimes comes when people experience certain emotions, such as grief or pride (I guess that's where the increased muscle tension comes into play.) Like when I revisited the pictures and post that my sister made on her journal the other day of our mother. I got one of the worst or most painful feelings of a lump in my throat that I can remember. It stayed with me for such a long time, longer than usual, but eventually went away. I get different degrees of this sensation, and all have happened during emotional times, even in a movie or show, especially when the “good guys” win or someone gets rescued or something extremely sad happens.
What a marvelous miracle (and sometimes mystery) the body and its inner workings are.
Speaking of necks and throats, I recently made the acquaintance of Henry, a Great Blue Heron in Sun City. Since they don't have teeth and swallow their food whole, I often wonder what kind of sensation or maybe discomfort they (and other large water birds) experience when swallowing a huge prey. His breeding plumage was spectacular and the colors were intense. I think he knew it, too, because he paraded and sometimes just stood still making sure I could see and get pictures of his beautiful self.
