The tropical storm became a Hurricane yesterday! It made landfall late last night north of us. After it hit land, I think it was downgraded to a tropical storm again. Even though it is above us, we are on what they call the “dirty side,” meaning we are getting the brunt of the winds and rain. We had gusts 40-50 mph. Some places got 21” of rain in three days! We didn’t get that much in our area, but we got plenty. In the 16 years we have lived in this house, I have only ever seen the standing water in our yard this bad two other times! It was a steady rain through the night, heavy at times, but nothing like what the first day put down. The ground is so saturated it will take quite a while for it to recede. I hate the thought that the mosquitoes will have so many more places to breed!
The Island has so much flooding right now. Most of the businesses are closed and the gallery was closed yesterday and also today. Friends of ours out there said there were fish swimming in their yard! We are dry and safe in our house, electric still on and water and toilets draining okay, and I am thankful for that. Many other homes in lower areas around here have water coming in the doors. Sandbags were at a premium yesterday! Hope everyone who wanted them, got them. Pictures I took this morning of the worst part of the yard. Yes, that is probably Ernie (or Jack). He flew in yesterday afternoon and has been pretty much been hanging out here since.
Looking out my studio door this morning . . .

Day Three . . . the ground is so saturated the water is not receding very quickly . . .
I usually gauge flooding by the little twin palms. They have only been underwater two other times that I can remember since we have lived here . . .
Under all that standing water is the patio drain . . .
