the evolving trees ….

Over the last few weeks I have bought lots of wire.....enough for maybe 40 trees (several different colors), collected and made various bases and embellishments for the trees and bases. I have become obsessed with making wire trees! I’m starting my 5th one now. I learned the hard way that the heavier wire is just too hard for me to bend and twist. The thinner the wire, the easier it is to bend and shape, and so my original idea for large trees, has been scrapped (at least for now) and I’m working with mostly 24g wires. My fingers and joints are not strong enough and just couldn’t take all that twisting of the heavier wires. I am using pliers, too, which makes it all much easier.

I learned a lot from the first one, which was pretty crude, what to do and not do. Each tree becomes a learning experience (as with anything) for the next one. They take some forethought and planning before you start the twisting, but I’m finding there’s really no right or wrong look to your tree.

I’ve got other things in the studio that need my attention, but I just can’t seem to stay away from these trees! I have always been fascinated by still-standing dead trees. I love the old rugged, gnarled look of the trunk, roots and bare branches. I think I actually like the looks of them better than trees with leaves. I’ve always been intrigued by old things….things that are on their way out. They seem to have a different beauty and character to me….more so than something young and fresh.

I put them behind the cut because I made one rather large composite of them all.

In the 3rd tree, that green is a piece of fused glass. I’d like to somehow put a piece of glass somewhere with each tree to “make it my own.” The trees are averaging 6"-8" tall, minus the base. I did put a few beads on the branches of the 2nd tree. I tend to like the bare branches myself, but am planning on making some with lots of beads (or other embellishments), too.

If you care to comment, I'd love to know what you think.........
