on the hunt - 210

This wonderful old clay vessel is about two feet across. The kiln must have been huge! It is so heavy I can barely lift it when it is empty. I “inherited” it from dear Betty after she passed away. It was in much better shape when I first got it, but time is slowly taking it back.

Betty was multi-talented, and since one of the things she made at one time were fountains, I’m guessing this must have been the basin for one of them.

When I first saw it, it was partially buried in the back corner of her yard beside the shed. As some potters do, if something does not come out of the kiln perfect and to their liking, they will smash it or bury it in the ground. Betty did this, and I got some of the best treasures for my garden from her yard, mostly partially buried.

Betty left this world over four years ago. I can hardly believe it has been that long. I think of her so often with smiles and tears of our times together.

This particular basin has been located and relocated a few places in the yard now and planted up with many different things. Pete and I very carefully carried it together about 40 feet over by the new swing when we started the BackYard Redo. It is crumbling more and has two large cracks; I’m amazed it is still holding together. This last move and planting will probably be its final one as I don’t want to tempt fate . . .
