Warner’s Bayou

I drive by Warner’s Bayou all the time, but have never stopped. It’s a small public beach area along the Manatee River where boats can put in the water. It is usually so crowded, that’s why I don’t stop. But one day last week, it was pretty windy (25-30 mph winds) and not many boats were out and it was a good time to stop and walk on its little stretch of beach. I saw some pretty neat stuff.

Something that caught my eye was this brilliant, bright apple green stuff in the shallow, rippling surf on the shoreline. At first I thought it was a piece of cellophane or tissue paper, but soon I realized it was not that at all. The more I walked down the beach the more of it I saw. When I got home, I tried to find it in my books, but could not. I looked under algae, seaweed, even jellyfish. I don’t know why, but the name “sea lettuce” came to mind, and so by chance, I looked it up, and that was it.
