I think the ettiquette is two spaces for typewriters or fixed-width fonts (such as courier), and one space for all other fonts with variable-width characters. However I just use one space for everything.
How do I pronounce spaces? And I rather keep them than tell 'em to go....
OK, seriously, isn't there a standard reference(i.e. a book) for the English language, holding a the spelling, grammar and writing rules? Like the "Duden" (www.duden.de , named after it's originator) for German. I know the Webster's dictionary, but is that an official thing?
There are a number of style guides around. If organisations care about this sort of thing, they generally pick one to be the official style guide for the organisation. IIRC, the Style Manual that Rach mentioned earlier is the official style guide for Australian Government publications - it was also our grammar textbook at uni.
