Sadly for you, she took her shirt off but was still fully dressed.

May I ask why Anna Nicole Smith's death is being treated in the news with the same fanfare ask JFK Jr.'s or Princess Di's deaths? Not to be cold or bitchy or any of those other things I'm often accused of being, but what did this person add to the world? As far as I can tell, the only thing she ever gave us was a reference point for all future ( Read more... )

note that most people don't care that much about anna nicole's death, really. a few nuts will be crying at her wake, but for everyone else it's more of a surprising end to a public figure. i mean, why do we care about jfk jr? and while it might be read by newspaper buyers as such, i have to believe that some of the coverage is written a wee bit tongue in cheek ( ... )

I think we cared about JFK Jr. because he was a Kennedy, and this country is vaguely obsessed with them. Also, he was, at least, a decent human being ( ... )

we're completely assbackwards re: sexuality, that's very true. i just have a hard time giving marilyn credit because i never get the sense that she was sharp, or calculating... anyway. she represents a shift but it wasn't a shift made because of her skills. jayne mansfield could have been the sea-changing person, just as well. then again, i think she was considered more whorey, which i don't quite get.

also: the media overblows everything these days. the media's taken Media Growth Hormone and we do have 24-hour access to "breaking news," so anyone who dies gets this kind of ridiculous treatment... if he/she is currently in the gossip pages. i guess i'm jaded enough to think the anna nicole stuff is the silliness we contend with in the current media environment-- along with lying asshats who make up things about Democratic candidates...

Oh, Marilyn definitely did not break down the sexy=dumb theme in American culture. My thing is, even though it could have been someone else in her position, it was her. I don't really think she calculated it that way, but that was how it worked out.

I think you're right about media ridiculousness. But it still annoys the piss out of me.

sorry, i've been inundated with anna nicole haterade and it's like, people, it's not that serious, even if it's all over the news-- the news loves a good story that isn't American soldiers are dying again or our president is talking smack.

Also, tomorrow night at Thoms: Kentucky vs. Florida.

Speaking of length...

I always remember Billy Budd as the shortest but most difficult book I've ever read. I think that bitch was like 80 pages but it took me forrrrever.
