I've also flirted with RAID yet been repelled by cost. For us it's music instead of photos: we would like a central music server so we can package up all the CDs and put them in storage. And if we had a RAID we would use it for data backups. So far I just have not been able to justify the cost.

For music I have been using MP3tunes.com. I like it because I can access my music from anywhere.

Either you have not considered DVD storage, or you have a staggering amount of images. At my Napster peak, my music consisted of less than 10 gigs. Nowadays I could burn it all to a single DVD.

If DVD is too slow for you, and you want a secure drive to store your images on, then RAID isn't a bad way to go. It is about a 300 dollar outlay though. (Assuming you already have a RAID capable MB)

My photo collection is in the 200 gb range and growing. DVDs are an organizational nightmare.

Have you tried Mozy.com? It's a backup service that is free up to a certain MB, and very cheap (like $5/month) for unlimited. I used it for a few months, but had to cancel because my upload speeds on satellite aren't sufficient for offsite backups.
