It was the hardest thing she had ever had to do in her life, but here she was packing her things up. When the offer had come through Rose wasn’t going to take it, but things change and here she was, boxing up the few parts of a life she’d made on this earth and loading them into the jeep.
It hurt so damn much, but she knew it was the right thing to do. That was Rose, always doing the right thing, always doing things for others. She wondered if Sarah Jane had ever cared for anyone that wasn’t the Doctor, if ever…
Pressing a kiss to her dad’s cheek she held him tightly, squeezing so tight that she was sure she would hurt him, and then came Jackie, then Mickey and Jake, finally David. Rose felt like her heart was going break all over again. But it was what she had to do…things had all gone wrong and now…
“Rose…” Jake ran after her as she headed out to climb into the jeep, “You don’t have to do this.”
“I do,” she whispered softy, “It’s better for everyone this way, this way…this way is…” Looking down she felt the tears roll down her cheeks, “Jake I…”
He pulled her into his arms and held her has she cried, something he did too often, his fingers brushing through her hair. “Don’t go…”
“I can’t stay; I have nothing to stay for.” Pressing a kiss to his forehead she pulled something from her pocket, a key, the TARDIS key. “I have a chance,” she said softly, “A chance to search the skies for a way…”
“Rose, he said it was impossible, that you should live your life and…and…”
“That was before, we’ve found things, seen things. The Rift in Cardiff, it might help out. I can’t even say that I am leaving forever but, if I am, I want my things this time.”
“But Rose.”
“And if not I’ll only be in Cardiff, Jake, it’s a chance to do what I do best, help people save the world. I’ll just be a phone call away and…What do I have here? You have Mickey, Mom has Dad and I…I just get in the way. I’ll miss you guys, I will but…I need to find my own place, besides, I can’t live with Mom and Dad forever.”
Pressing a kiss into Jake’s forehead she smiled, climbing into the drivers seat and closing the door. With a wave she started the engine and drove away.
