On the 23rd day, Elliot texts Jonah as he’s on his way home: Can’t go out tonight, it’s too soon. Jonah makes a detour to the Thai place on Mt. Auburn. He arrives home to find Elliot, exactly as he’d anticipated, curled on the couch before the makeshift coffee table shrine he erected after the news. Or, rather, it had started out as a shrine; by now it’s more like a nest lined with Playbills and Post-Its highlighting quotes from Finishing The Hat.
Jonah pauses in the doorway, waiting to see if the aroma of Elliot’s favorite curry will rouse him. When it doesn’t, he puts the takeout on the floor, steps gingerly over the volumes of Ethan Mordden (which Elliot had dragged from the shelves so that Ethan Mordden could mourn with them, spiritually) and the three different librettos of three different versions of Follies, and bends down to gently pry the photo from Elliot’s fist.
“Sorry,” Elliot says, muffled, sitting up and clutching Jonah instead of the photo. “I just miss him.”
"It's okay," Jonah says, ruffling his hair. "We'll miss him together." And he places the picture of Stephen Sondheim back in the center of the shrine.
