So, I have this question about a fanfic of mine and thought maybe someone from my f-list could share thoughts on what to do... Probably you are too busy anyway, but I figured I could just ask ( Read more... )

Okay, so 1. It's definitely not weird to post in 700-800 word parts. Well, I've done it. (which, on consideration might not be a good indication that it's not weird. hehe) 2. A lot of people post stuff in progress. I'm a VERY slow writer, and I'm a compulsive editor so I will never publish something in progress unless it's a series of discrete stories. I'm afraid I'll want to change the beginning and then I'll be sort of committed to what I've written. (perhaps this is control freakishness, too?) That's really a personal thing, though.

For what it's worth, I'm in a similar boat. I am working on a story that I think will end up being anywhere from 15,000 to 50,000 words (a range, I know, but I just can't judge, despite having a very detailed plan already). I've been working on it since... March? I don't know when I'll finish, but I know I won't post anything until it's completed.

Thanks for your advice! :-)

Hm, I haven't really thought about it, but you are right - once the beginning is posted, I can't really change anything anymore... I don't really know if that would bother me or if I would be relieved if I didn't have to edit anymore, though. It's definitely worth considering. I haven't posted any work in progress so far, but then I mostly write very short fics anyway.
But it's good to know that other people post shorter stuff, too - if you look around lj it seems like several thousand words are the minimum... :-/

Good luck for your very long and detailed story then! That does sound like a lot of work and I can totally understand you have been working on it for several month. Hope you'll get it done to your content eventually! :-)

The vast majority of what I write is below 1,000 words, honestly. :-)

I had the same question just recently! Because I used to only post on ff.net, where 1000 to 2000-word chapters are pretty standard, and everyone on lj seemed to be posting 15000 words in one go... So I looked around a bit more, and in fact lots of people on lj were posting WIPs with chapters as short as yours (cue sigh of relief on my part ;) ). And if you post the first two parts that will make about 1500 words, which is really a very decent length, I think. :)

Thanks for taking the time and commenting! :-)

I am glad to hear I am not the only one worrying about this. I have mostly seen those very long chapters, too - but really? I haven't written anything remotely in the range of 15000 thousand words ever, so this alone for a chapter? That leaves me in awe of these writers, but it's also a bit intimidating. So I am relieved to find other people posting shorter stories, too.

Thanks for the encouragement (and btw, I am looking forward to reading the next part of your story!). :-)
