Today I have a really fun rec for all of you:
PodCastle PodCastle is a podcast (as you may have guessed from the name) that specializes in fantasy short stories. Every week there is a new short story by both famous and not-so-well-known authors, read by varying but very great readers. The best thing: All those stories are for free! :-D (And of course they are really good, too.)
I actually waited for some weeks after finding PodCastle, so I could rec you some individual stories. However, singling out stories is really hard. Not only are most of them pretty awesome, they are very different, too. From classical fantasy setting to magic realism, from humour to tragedy, from slightly meta to earnest world-building - PodCastle just has such a variety of stories!
Well, I try to give you just some quite random recs of stories that I liked a lot one way or the other. But if you like fantasy and have some time, I'd recommend to check out other stories, too. And they are pretty handy to listen to while commuting. :-)
The people on my f-list who are into ACD canon Holmes, might enjoy Daniel Abraham's story
Balfour and Meriwether in the Adventure of the Emperor’s Vengeance. It has the same gaslight setting and crime-solving protagonists, but is rather a bit more steampunky than Conan Doyle. But in a fun way! ^^
Also by Daniel Abraham (okay, he IS my favourite author...) I recommend
The Cambist and Lord Iron, a quiet, elegant and thoughtful tale about banking, what finance actually means and the value of human life.
If you want something short and funny, try
Machine Washable by Keffy R.M. Kehrli. Can't say much without giving the joke away, but if you want a quick laugh, give it a try.
Also truly hilarious is Leah Bobet's
The Parable of the Shower. It's an ironic take on religion, though, so if you are sensitive on that topic, check out the teaser to see whether it's for you before listening to the whole story.
If you like Nordic mythology, check out
Wolves Till the World Goes Down by Greg van Eekhout. It's a fun version of prophecies and specifically Ragnarök and about how much you can change what has been foreseen.
And finally there is
Bespoke by Genevieve Valentine, a beautiful short story about time travel, mentors and (the making of) clothes.
Okay, these stories are but a little glimpse into the huge and wonderful world of PodCastle. As I said, if you like fantasy and stories and listening to them, there are so many more stories waiting for you! :-)
