holmestice rec list summer 2012

Like last year, I’d like give you some small glimpse into the wonderful thing that has been the latest round of holmestice. These recs are some of my favourite stories, but by no means all of the best. So if you have any spare time, I highly recommend checking out all the other entries as well! But here we go with this year’s holmestice rec list:

  • For You I’ll Try by goldvermilion87: This fic is a hilarious fusion of BBC’s Sherlock and Without a Clue, with additional hysterical references to Twilight. Ever wanted to see a pretty clueless Sherlock who wasn’t up to his own deductions and making explanations up on the go? And John being smart and in control? Or Sherlock covered in glitter being mistaken for Edward by hysterical Twilight fan girls? If yes, go and read that story right now! (And if Without a Clue is only half as brilliant as this fic, I’d better go and watch it right now, too!)
  • A Mutually Beneficial Arrangement by igrockspock: Woho, this is my very own gift fic and it’s amazing!! And it has exactly what I asked for (as the author so kindly summarised): Irene POV, banter, and Sherlock and Irene trying to outsmart each other. Sherlock and Irene are both very well characterized and I'm particularly amazed how well the author manages to get inside Irene's head. Her thoughts and motivations are very believable and ring perfectly true with how we've met her in the series. Sherlock's and Irene's interactions are pitch-perfect, rapid banter back and forth and both of them being more vulnerable and depending on each other than they want to admit. This fic is a truly fascinating study of Irene, Sherlock and their relationship - and a fun read! :-)
  • Morbid Curiosity by pyjamapants: A very interesting and intriguing take on how Molly and Irene might interact should they meet Post-Reichenbach. I love theportrayals of both Irene and Molly, they are very accurate and true to character. And it's really fascinating to see their relationship evolve from plain distrust, almost hostility to some weird sort of understanding.
  • Frail Deeds Might Have Danced by sc010f: Wow. This is a truly mindbending, utterly brilliant fic that left me completely speechless. It's a completely believable and VERY creative take on the Moriarty / Richard Brook duality with the very believable addition of Kitty Riley. The story might confuse you at first and you may have to pay close attention to follow, but it's one of the few stories I've encountered so far that makes you feel sorry for Moriarty at the end.
  • Pseudoscience by fuyu_no_fuhei: This is a very interesting AU in which both Sherlock and John meet in neighbouring prison cells after they have been captured by fanatic scientist. More than that, scientist with a lack of methodology which annoys Sherlock even more than just being captured... This story is a fun and enjoyable read and I particularly enojyed all the little references and how very well in character both John and Sherlock were which made the AU much more convincing. (People who are not fond of slash or sexuality in fics might skip the last couple of sentences, though...)
  • Who Shot Sherlock Holmes? by sherlockholmes: A very exciting and clever case!fic! The author really put a lot of effort into creating all kinds of different clues, theories, red herrings and misdirections and I love how easy the solution is in the end - and yet completely unexpected! :-D The whole story is told through Lestrade's point of view which I found really interesting and refreshing, even though I'm usually not such a big fan of Lestrade... But here it works just fine! :-)
Ok, sadly, I ran a bit out of time, so these stories are only a few very favourite ones. But lots of other are just as awesome, so head over and check them out! :-)
(Also, I didn't manage to post before the reveals, so chances are you've already read the fics on some other comm... I filled in the authors as far as I know them.)
