Random musings on a certain fanon

So, inevitably with "The Reichenbach Fall" there have been lots and lots post-fall fics lately. Mostly depressing and sad and others happier (or depressing in a different way?) dealing with John's and Sherlock's post-hiatus reunion. Well, I could have guessed that most of them wouldn't be my cup of tea - too dramatic and then romantic and emotional, some bordering on very cheesy. Weirdly though that wasn't the thing that bothered me most. What did was the fact that ALL of these fics feature John punching Sherlock in the face after Sherlock comes back. o.O

Ok, I don't exactly imagine BBC John to faint in EMPT-style (although that would be too adorable not to happen ♥ *coughs*). But what is so great about him punching Sherlock? Is it supposed to be cathartic?? I don't know, I don't see a really good reason to punch friends of mine (unless they ask for it and I don't mean in subtext ^^). Especially since in the BBC canon Sherlock faked his death to protect John! Not just to free the whole world of Moriarty and his network, but specifically to protect his friends. And even though it's not been said yet, I guess that's the reason he stays dead for a while. So why would John punch him over that?

Plus, lets not forget that this is the same John who just shrugged and said "You were wrong about the sugar" after being abused for one of Sherlock's very evil mind experiments in "The Hounds of Baskerville". I mean, sure, John is heartbroken and sad now. But if Sherlock explained his reasons, I can't really see him getting that angry with Sherlock. Neither can I imagine his first reaction to seeing Sherlock again being a slap in the face. (Though I can't come up with a fitting reaction John would show myself.)

Can anyone explain to me why this particular fanon is so widespread and popular that it features in EVERY story I've read so far??
