Time for another "I'm still here!" post

Too busy to breathe, this last month. Back to work, back to school, the performances of My Fair Lady were just last weekend, and now we're at older daughter's 14th birthday. The parenting thing has been up and down, trying to sort out how much is tiredness and work and normal teenage conflict, and how much is genuinely problematic and unhealthy that we should get some help with.

There are a few fun things, though. One of my favourite "popcorn" sites is Jezebel, fashion and entertainment and a little feminism. The very serious "how to dress" posts always crack me up, especially when they linked to one from the U Chicago law school. Except for preferring flats to heels, it was pretty much word for word the advice (NEVER pants, ALWAYS nylons, NO dangly earrings or cleavage, NO prints) that my partner got more than 25 years ago from her law school. This is why I love academia - I'm in Arts, not Business or Social Sciences, so anything more elaborate than jeans and athletic shoes and polar fleece (men or women) is considered kind of stylish. For my part, I have much nicer clothes in my forties than I had in my twenties, though I am no thinner now. And a lot more of them. Thanks,
maggie47 for losing 60 pounds!

The other fun post I saw there recently was a pic labelled Captain Jack - Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp filming the 4th Pirates movie. What made me laugh was that more than half of the responses were people complaining that they had wanted Captain Jack HARKNESS instead. Jezebel is far, far away from UK geekdom, but Captain Jack conquers all. That character, so unlikely in theory (let's hire an out gay musical theatre star to play an omnisexual action hero!) has turned out to be unbelievably popular in practice, and hopefully he won't be an exception, he'll be the leader of a new trend.
