catch up time

I should be finishing up a textbook review, but I cannot summon the energy. So a couple of things - on the TW front, I think lefaym and sqyd 's meta posts on why CoE seems to be eating the fandom say all the things I would have said, barring a little schadenfreude. The short version - while I am very much enjoying the Virtual Season 3, any actual TW material - audiobooks, a series 4, tie-in novels, whatever - has zero appeal for me. My connection to "official" TW stops with The Dead Line, and while I am very interested in seeing what GDL for example does next and am enjoying (though not yet entirely convinced by) the new Doctor, I find myself without enthusiasm either for more TW or more RTD.

The other thing that I'm mulling over is a post I read today (and I can't track down WHERE!) on the race!fail in True Blood, specifically the miniepisode where Pam and Eric audition strippers. While I see and actually agree with the comments on how poorly the black stripper is portrayed compared to the white Eastern European stripper they choose, I'm also thinking -- This is True Blood. Race!fail comes with the source material, as do gender!fail (don't worry about the war starting, Sookie, focus on cleaning your house and bringing a covered dish to the new neighbours) sexuality!fail (campy gays and pathetic single elderly gays, wow how daring) and class!fail (workingclass white folks are dumb as stumps and bigoted, we're happy to mock and stereotype everyone!). I think Eric is the only character who we know has some post-secondary education, kind of, given that he learned his English at community college. Why is anyone surprised by the racism? The tv series is actually a little better than the books, where Lafayette is killed early on, where Sookie has no POC as friends and remarks in surprise that POC attend Portia and Andy's wedding. I don't expect much from True Blood except a reasonable amount of naked Alexander Skarsgard and the delightful snark of my favourite Pam.

So that's where I am - there are a couple of fandoms that I lurk in, a handful of shows that I like, but nothing enthralls me. I'm waiting to fall in love with something new, and don't even know where to look.
