Last night my friend Maryn and I went to the Bill Murray's new movie, Broken Flowers. It was playing at Wescott Cinema, which is an old-fashioned, one-theater venue that plays independent or artistic films. Flowers took awhile to get going, but once it did I really got drawn in. It's about this man who is devoutly single until he gets an anonymous letter from an old girlfriend saying they fathered a son together and the son is out looking for him. Murray, in turn, hits the road to visit all of the potential mothers and find out who wrote the letter.
It reminded me a little of Lost in Translation in its style, but with a little more comedy involved. The characters were really unique, though, and I love Bill Murray. I think he's the perfect guy and such a great actor. If you see Broken Flowers playing anywhere, you should try to check it out.
While watching the previews for the movies that would be coming to Wescott in the next few weeks, Maryn and I decided we'd be spending a lot of time there. Everything is Illuminated looked really good and sort of Big Fish-esq. The Aristocrats is maybe the most intriguing movie to come out in several years. It features over 100 well-known comics, from Jon Stewart to Robin Williams, each telling their own version of the dirtiest joke ever told. Each version starts and ends with the same line but the middle is the comic's own creation. They've had walkouts almost everywhere it was shown, but the people who stayed in the theater said it was one of the funniest movies they'd ever seen. I just think it sounds like such an interesting premise.
