Mom and Dad are in the 1,000 Islands for the weekend, so I have the house to myself for a few days. That would be considerably more pleasant if the whole thing didn't currently smell like shit.
Have you ever seen Dogma? You know that scene in the bar when Azrial sends a shit deamon after Jay and Silent Bob? That's what my living room looked like last night.
I should clarify - I live in a really old house. As in 185 years old. Certain things come with the territory in a house that old - leaks, not great insulation, creeks and moans as the house "settles", stuff hidden in the walls, gross, creepy basement and pathetically outdated and inefficient plumbing. Our toiltes have been on the skids for a few days and yesterday the plumber finally showed up. Someone had the brilliant idea of doing this "power flush" thing to clear the line using several tons of water pressure. Okkaaaaaaaay.....
I was innocently watching TV in the front room when I heard water gushing. Huh. That's not supposed to happen. I got up to investigate and found my living room quickly filling with raw sewage.
Oh. My. God.
Everything is cleaned up now, thanks to this angel network that works with our insurance company to take care of....things like that. There are huge fans blowing and disinfectants everywhere so strong that I think I got a little high off of them last night. So now, as my parents escape to the fresh air of the 1,000 Islands, I'm doing everything I can think of to stay outside. Fab.
On a much better note, Liz is coming home next week and I can't wait. I hear she's fairly excited, too. The week after that I'm going to Virginia to see the fam who, incidentally live on the lake that one of my favorite movies, What About Bob, was filmed on. FYI, the house wasn't really blown up. After that it's on to D.C. for the U.S. Foreign Policy Institute. I'm trying to make my way through the required reading for it now and it's fairly brutal. I like diplomacy and polisci and all that stuff, but this is pretty dry.
Catherine and Karin are also in D.C., so we're lucky enough to have 3/4 of an idgit reunion. Hint hint, Asian one.
By the time I get home from that, we'll be having football media day at the Dome. I'm signed up to work, which officially marks the moment my entire life is taken over by Syracuse football. Apparently for the fall I'm doing "injury reports", which means when someone gets dragged off the field, I follow them to the training room, ask what's wrong, then tell any reporters "it's just a light sprain". Or something like that. I also am involved in recording stats, so every Sunday after a game I'm going to be in the office, imputting yards, rushing and recieving; tackles, solo and assisted; sacks (did you know it's only statistically considered a sack if the quarterback is tackled while trying to make a pass? Catching him scrambling around doesn't count); receptions; TD's; fieldgoals; extra points; blocks; etc, for each player. Keep in mind, we have over 100 football players. At the same time, I think it will be kind of fun and I'm definitely going to learn a lot more about the X's and O's of football, which I've been meaning to do for awhile.
Back to work.
