New Years Trip

Good thing I didn't have a New Year's resolution to update LJ more often. :-)

Eldred and I were home for 4 days before heading south again. This time it wasn't quite so far. We spent several days with my family. We had a fun time, relaxing and chatting. We enjoyed a yummy New Year's Day dinner with the whole family. We opened Christmas presents on New Year's Day too. The weather was warm so we got too warm holiday trips this winter.

On Friday, we (Eldred, me, my sister, and my niece) visited the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum in the tiny town of Leslie, Georgia. My sister had picked up a brochure and thought it looked interesting. She even called that morning to make sure they were open. They were, but what they didn't tell her was that the tour guide was gone to lunch from 12-1. We arrived just after noon to find that we had an hour to kill. I took a photo of Eldred standing next to the British callbox outside though. We headed to lunch and then back to the museum.

I expected it to be one small room, but it was several rooms. It was huge. There were a lot of great Victorian era phones in decorative wooden boxes. Now I want one for our house. We could give it a steampunk touch! There were switchboards with the backs exposed so you could see the wiring. In addition to phones and phone memorabilia, there were at least two pipe organs, a player piano, and an antique car collection. We couldn't go in the car section because they were working on it. Near the end of the tour there was a stuffed bear wearing overalls and an old operator headset. When the guide pressed 1 on the phone nearby, Bubba the bear answered. Cheesy, but I was quite amused anyway. The end of the tour was the display containing the switchboards used while Carter was President. And one of Billy Carter's phones. I loved the museum. What a great find! Looks like Roadside America found it too.

On the way home on Sunday we stopped in Atlanta to see the Terracotta Army exhibit at the High Museum of Art. I had purchased memberships for us on the theory that we could go to Atlanta again a few times during the year to see other exhibits. I'm glad I did because our line had only one person in front of us. Our timing was great. We got the timed tickets for 1:00 and the line was already moving when we got into it. I had been somewhat reluctant to go, but the exhibit was really good and I enjoyed it a lot. Julie had been to see it with her school. She told us to make sure to get the audio tour and that the kid version was better. Good advice. The audio was worth it. And the kid version was entertaining and informative, while the adult version was day and informative. We spent a couple of hours going through. We got a salad at the cafe, then did a quick visit to the the small Medieval and Renaissance Treasures exhibit and the Louvre exhibit. We plan to return to see the permanent exhibit.
