Pennsic Prep Continues

When I arrived home from work Saturday evening, Eldred was in the driveway finishing up nailing shingles on the roof for the Pennsic gatehouse with Lucien helping. Lucien had to leave right after I got home but the work was pretty much done. It looks really nice! Those roof pieces are heavy though!

Eldred was pooped from all that time in the sun, so I decided to make a peplos from a pale purple twin sheet I had picked up at the Salvation Army during my lunch break. It was interesting to note the deterioriation in construction quality over the past 30 years. The sheet from the 70s is largers and has real seams on all sides; the new one has a sloppy serge job on the side edges.

I took my time with the first one, noting measurements for future reference. It only took a couple of hours. I still have a bit of finish work. I have to finish some edges and tack the place were the brooches go so I don't have to figure it out every time I wear it. I think I can reduce it to an hour next time. The result is acceptable. Since the sheet was shorter than the lime experiment, I am going to have to find full-size sheets from now on so I can blouse it over the belt. Unfortunately, there is a giant patch in the front below the knee with several grease spots. I will try Oxyclean on them. If that doesn't work, it can become kitchen wear!

Sunday Eldred and I went to a picnic reception for Raimondo and his new bride. The setting in Falls Park was lovely. The band was good. The BBQ and beans were yummy. It was great to see ladypyrate, derwyth, Elizabeth, and falconleather. Unfortunately, I could only stay about 45 minutes before heading off to work. It was so humid out that by the time I hiked back to the car, I was soaked. Good thing it was cool in the library.

When I got home, Eldred was attempting to set up the gatehouse frame in the back yard. I went out to help. We got the frame up and tried out one of the dragon head pieces for the end of the roof. It is going to look awesome when finished! We decided there was no way we could do more. We need someone with much better upper body strength than I have! I am pitiful! I did take photos of our Norse-inspired gatehouse. We took it apart and got the pieces in the garage just before the rain storm hit. Yay for rain!

This morning on the way to work I scored a full size pale purple sheet from Goodwill. I remembered that we have a burgundy sheet we have been using for table covering. That will be 3 outfits after a few hours work. Yay!
